Benefit golf classic date nears

SchoolPower will hold its 10th annual Golf and Gourmet Classic at

Coto de Caza Golf and Racquet Club on Nov. 4.

The golf tournament traditionally raises nearly $90,000 a year and

benefits programs in the Laguna Beach Unified School District.

For the past three years the Laguna Beach High athletic department

has joined forces with SchoolPower to make the event more profitable.

The school's athletic programs will be funded by 20 percent of the

event's proceeds, SchoolPower officials said.

In addition to the golf tournament, a silent auction, live auction

and raffle will be held the day of the event.

For information on reserving a spot in the tournament or attending

any function, contact SchoolPower at (949) 494-6811.

Laguna gridders fall

Laguna Beach's Pop Warner Football team went up against a powerful

and unbeaten Yorba Linda squad last Saturday and was handed a 38-6

defeat.

Yorba Linda bolted to a big first half lead, and was never

threatened.

Laguna Beach got on the scoreboard in the third period when wide

receiver Chris Hyden took a pitch and scored on a 70-yard reverse

play.

Hyden, named his team's player of the game by the Laguna coaching

staff, also scored on a 50-yard run, which was nullified by a

penalty.

Laguna will attempt to halt a losing streak at five games Saturday

when they take on Tustin in a 5 p.m. kickoff at San Clemente High.

Laguna drops pair

Laguna Beach's boys' under-13 soccer team found the going tough

last weekend as it dropped a pair of Silver South Division contests.

On Saturday, Laguna Beach lost a 4-0 decision to the

co-division-leading Irvine Strikers Red at Alton Park.

On Sunday, Laguna was handed a 5-0 shutout loss by Wolfpack Blue

in a match played at Wolfpack Field in Fountain Valley.

It was Wolfpack Blue's first win of the season.

The two losses puts Laguna (1-4-2) winless in its last three

matches. The team has not won since defeating FRYSC Rush, 2-1, in the

fall season opener back on Sept. 8.

Laguna gets another crack at FRYSC Rush, also 1-4-2, on Saturday

when the teams do battle in a 9:30 a.m. match at Acacia Park in

Fullerton.

Laguna Beach and FRYSC Rush currently are tied for sixth place in

the Silver South Division standings.

Silver South Standings

1T. Irvine Strikers Red and Real FC Toros, 5-0-2; 3. Mission Viejo

SC Brazil, 5-2; 4. JUSA Select B-89b, 1-1-5; Wolfpack Blue, 1-3-3;

6T. Laguna Beach and FRYSC Rush, 1-4-2; 8. Canyon PSA, 0-5-2.
