The Laguna Playhouse will open the Youth Theatre season with

"Anastasia Krupnik," based on the title character of Lois Lowry's

enormously popular series of books. Anastasia writes about her

schoolteacher, the new baby that will soon arrive in their family,

her silly grandmother and her crush on Washburn Cummings. The play

will run through Oct. 20. The playhouse is at 606 Laguna Canyon Road.

LAGUNA SOUTH COAST CINEMAS

The Laguna South Coast Cinemas will present "Sordid Lives," a film

about a family in a small Texas town preparing for the funeral of

their mother. The movie will show at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday as

part of the Weekend Foreign & Indie Film series. Ticket prices are $8

The gallery will celebrate a collection of new paintings by

The Laguna Art Museum will hold its 20th annual Art Auction. More

than 200 California artists have donated work. The live auction will

be hosted by Stacey Roman, former vice president of Butterfield &

Butterfield. Cocktails and heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served

starting at 6 p.m.; the live auction will begin at 7 p.m. This year's
