Music her major mission

Woman of the Year called ‘formidable,’ a ‘pitbull’ and ‘self-effacing’ for longtime efforts to bring music to Laguna.

A woman who says she can only play the radio was honored June 5 for promoting music in Laguna.

Lucinda “Cindy” Prewitt may not have musical talent, but she has a passion for bringing free and affordable performances to town, especially to youth, and the grit to get it done. She was recognized for her accomplishments at a luncheon hosted by the Laguna Beach Woman’s Club and attended by representatives of the city’s elite organizations.

“She has brought us everything from Bach to Bluegrass,” said Anne Johnson, luncheon co-chairwoman.

Prewitt quickly became involved in community activities after she moved here with her husband, Dr. Paul Prewitt, now retired from the staff at South Coast Medical Center.

She was a founding member of the center’s Women’s Auxiliary and the Laguna Art Museum’s Junior Council, a South Laguna Civic Assn. board member, community service chairwoman for the Laguna chapter of the American Assn. of University Women, an appointee to the city’s Arts Commission and instrumental in the formation of the Laguna Beach Alliance for the Arts.

When her children, Jenn and Sean, were in school, Prewitt was active in the PTA and scouting, serving on the city’s Police Explorer Task Force when a proposal was made to sever the city’s connection with the Boy Scouts of America, and a participant in the Summit on Youth. She volunteered at Human Options, a shelter for abused women and their children, founded in Laguna Beach. She was a trustee and president of SchoolPower.

“We honor her today for all these activities, but primarily for the creation of Laguna Beach Live!, the Music Festival, the free Sunday Chamber Music Concerts at Laguna College of Art & Design, the Summer Jazz Concert Series at Hotel Laguna and the new folk music concerts, launched last month with Afro-Cuban jazz at the Woman’s Club,” said Councilwoman Elizabeth Pearson, citing the reasons for Prewitt’s nomination as Woman of the Year. She comes up with the idea, makes it happen and then stands at the door and collects ticket money,” Pearson said.

Prewitt said her involvement with the Philharmonic Society’s children’s program led to the formation of Laguna Beach Live! — “the mother of all our music programs.”

If Laguna Beach Live! is the mother, the Artist’s Theatre on the high school campus is the cradle.
