A $1.5 million streetscape project in South Laguna was dedicated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony July 3.

The ceremony was attended by local residents and representatives from the city of Laguna Beach, City Council and the South Laguna Civic Assn.

The project includes two new bus shelters, 21 street trees, a landscaped street median, new sidewalk, enhanced pedestrian lighting, cobblestone planters, six added on-street parking spaces and a public parking lot with 10 spaces.

The project was 60% funded by a Federal Transportation Enhancement grant awarded two years ago.

Public Works Director Steve May said the project was primarily intended to improve pedestrian accessibility and to provide enhanced scenic features along Coast Highway in the South Laguna area.

Planning for the project began 10 years ago.

The plan was approved by the Design Review Board five years ago, and the project scored high in the competition for a Federal grant intended for scenic highways and pedestrian improvements, according to city officials.
