Surfing Laguna:

A ‘Cosmic’ event

October 02, 2009|By Chris Williams

This weekend at Salt Creek will be the 10th annual Cosmic Creek surf Festival. It’s a throwback event that features a surf contest in which competitors ride equipment from surfing’s psychedelic era. Single fins, twins, Bonzers, and of course fish of all shapes and sizes will be in full effect.

Saturday evening there will be a concert featuring Donavon Frankenriter at [seven-degrees]. Proceeds will support the Surfrider Foundation. For tickets and more info go to Billabong.com/cosmic.creek.

People who surf

I was surfing Doheny the other day with my sons and some groms from the neighborhood when I ran into friend and head coach of the USA surf team, Ian Cairns. Ian’s star pupil was his son Ethan, who, as we watched from shore, snagged a sweet little wave, made the drop and rode it confidently to shore.

Ian erupted in cheers for his grom as if he had just won a world title, which if bloodlines have anything to do with it should make Ethan a lock for the crown in around 2020.
