A driver who was shot and critically injured Tuesday by police officers on South Coast Highway has died, Laguna Beach police said on Wednesday. The Orange County Sheriff's Department has identified him as Colby Joshua Koenig, 25, of Foothill Ranch. Koenig died at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo at 5:20 p.m. on Tuesday, said Jim Amormino, a Sheriff's spokesman. No other details were immediately available.
Officers shot Koenig, who was suspected of causing a traffic collision at South Coast Highway at St. Anns Drive. The reason for the shooting, the driver’s name and the names of the officers involved in the shooting had not been released as of Tuesday afternoon. The man, who, police believe, was in his 20s, was taken in critical condition to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, after the 7:55 a.m. collision.
“However, witnesses said they saw the car moving back and forth and words were exchanged by the driver and an officer,” Lt. Jason Kravetz, a spokesman for the Laguna Beach Police department, said. “More than one officer opened fire.”
