Spring sports begin

The Laguna Beach High baseball team begins play today at the Newport-Elks Tournament, as Breakers spring sports have officially sprung into action.

The Breakers are in the Costa Mesa bracket of the annual tournament, in Pool A with Cerritos, Orange and Savanna. They open their season at 3 p.m. today at home against Cerritos. They continue in the tournament Saturday, playing at Savanna at 10 a.m., then have their final pool-play game at 3 p.m. Monday at home against Orange.

Tournament play continues Wednesday and March 12.

Orange Coast League rival Costa Mesa is also in the Costa Mesa bracket, but in Pool B.

Among sports that have already gotten underway, the Laguna Beach boys’ volleyball team lost a tough five-game match at home Tuesday in their season opener against Edison, 21-25, 28-26, 25-22, 20-25 and 12-15.

Senior Scottie Chapel had a team-high 21 kills for the Breakers. Senior Travis Woloson added 19 kills and 23 assists and junior setter Robbie McKnight dished up 26 assists and had 10 kills, as did senior middle blocker Reed Thompson.

Laguna, coached by interim coach Steve Astor, played at Newport Harobr on Thursday in what was another challenging match. The Breakers are also at the University Tournament today and Saturday.

The Laguna boys’ golf team opened against San Clemente on Tuesday, falling, 187-200. The Breakers faced Orange Coast League rival Estancia in a match Wednesday at Aliso Viejo Country Club. The Breakers also played Aliso Niguel at El Niguel, on Thursday.

Boy’s’ tennis opened play Tuesday with a home match against Palos Verdes, then traveled on the road Wednesday to face Santa Barbara. The Breakers are at the California Classic tournament in Fresno this weekend.

The boys’ and girls’ swim teams open their seasons today with a meet at San Clemente.

Laguna track and field had its first dual meet of the season Wednesday, against La Sierra.
