Editorial: Summer season in swing

June 24, 2010

Laguna Beach is poised for another Festival season, with the Sawdust Festival and Art-A-Fair opening to the public today, and the Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters following soon after.

Locals got a "sneak peak" at the Sawdust on Tuesday evening, and the festival grounds were jammed with Lagunans seeking a chance to be the first to look at the newly constructed booths and greet their friends and neighbors. This is always a great kickoff to the summer festival season, and Art-A-Fair's opening party Wednesday followed suit.

The art party season started with a bang two weeks ago, when the Laguna Art Museum partnered with Hurley for a fabulous opening night for its new show, "Art Shack." This party started at Hurley on Forest Avenue and moved to the museum, a unique experience that was a treat for all involved.

Of course, summer is when local merchants, restaurant owners and hoteliers hope to cash in on the city's beautiful beaches and art offerings. Hopes are high for a profitable year for artists and retailers, despite a tough economy. This will be a critical year for many small businesses and the artists and galleries who are competing for customers' dollars.

One thing we can be sure of is that many people will flock to Laguna Beach for its natural charms and its artsy atmosphere, and to get a ride on the ever-more-popular free summer trolleys, which will also start rolling today.

Next up will be the Pageant preview events and the always-fun Festival of Arts opening party. With the Fourth of July falling on a Sunday this year, next weekend promises to be fun but also jam-packed with people.

Hint: Ride the trolleys!
