NJB tryouts are Monday at Thurston

Laguna Beach National Junior Basketball (NJB) will hold tryouts for its upcoming winter NJB season Monday at the Thurston Middle School gymnasium.

Tryout times for each division are as follows: Boys' and Girls' Div. 4 (second-grade) and Boys' Div. 3 (grades 3/4), 5 to 5:45 p.m.; all girls' divisions (Div. 3, grades 3/4; Div. 2, grades 5/6; Div. 1, grades 7/8), 6 to 6:45 p.m.; Boys' Div. 2 (grades 5/6) and Boys' 5th-Grade and 6th-Grade All-Net, 7 to 7:45 p.m., and Boys' 7th-Grade and 8th-Grade All-Net, 8 to 8:45 p.m.

Team practices begin in mid-October and are held once a week at Thurston. Games will be played every weekend, primarily on Saturdays, beginning in December through mid-March. The cost for the season is $225 per player for NJB divisional play and $175 for All-Net players. Payment is due at the time of registration. Breakers top boys' D-3 water polo poll

The first CIF Southern Section boys' Division 3 water polo poll of the regular season has Laguna Beach sitting atop the rankings. The Breakers, who are playing today and Saturday at the Riverside Poly Tournament, lead a poll that includes, in order, No. 2 Palos Verdes, Damien, Mira Costa, Santa Monica, Aliso Niguel, Capo Valley, Peninsula, South Pasadena and La Canada.

The Breakers open their home schedule Tuesday hosting No. 4 Mira Costa.

The Laguna Beach girls' volleyball team, which opened its season Tuesday with a home loss to Newport Harbor, is ranked second in the initial Division 1-A poll. The Breakers trail top-ranked Redlands East Valley in the rankings. Following the Redlands East Valley and the Breakers in the poll, in order, are Corona del Mar, Marymount, El Dorado, Los Osos, Esperanza, Vista Murrieta, Arroyo Grande and Valencia/Valencia. Newport Harbor is ranked eighth in Division 1-AA.

The Breakers begin play today at the Dave Mohs Tournament, hosted by Edison.
