CRYSTAL COVE STATE PARK

Crystal Cove State Park, 8471 N. Coast Hwy, has 3.5 miles of beach and 2,000 acres of undeveloped woodland. $15 day-use parking fee.

The park is open 6 a.m. to sunset daily. Due to the recent rainstorms, the backcountry is closed until further notice. The beaches and tidepools are open to the public. For more information, call (949) 497-7647 or e-mail wbonnin@parks.ca.gov.

Open House: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday: Crystal Cove State Park and Crystal Cove Alliance are hosting an Open House in the Park & Marine Research Facility in the Historic District. Guests will learn about science and the research that is being conducted in the park and participate in fun and simple activities. Afterwards, a park volunteer will lead a tidepool walk at the Rocky Bight tidepools. Park in the Los Trancos lot (from Coast Highway, turn inland at stoplight Los Trancos then walk across the street or take the shuttle) and meet at Cottage #22. $15 day-use parking fee.

Gray Whales Presentation: 7 p.m. Thursday: Join Mike Makofske from the American Cetacean Society for an evening talk and slide presentation about Gray Whales.. Meet at cottage #34 in the Historic District next to the Reservation Office. Park in the Los Trancos lot (from Coast Highway, turn inland at stoplight Los Trancos then walk across the street or take the shuttle).

LAGUNA COAST WILDERNESS PARK

Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, 20101 Laguna Canyon Road; reservations and information, (949) 923-2235; http://www.ocparks.com.

Rangers staff the park daily. Open 7 a.m. to sunset daily, including holidays. Parking lot hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Note: Due to recent rainstorms and flood damage, the wilderness parks are closed for general use until further notice. Keep It Wild Volunteer Day: 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers are needed to help fix trails and restore damaged vegetation. Meet at Little Sycamore Staging area (Nix Nature Center), 18751 Laguna Canyon Road.
