Returners give Laguna formidable lineup

Breakers boys' tennis team should have another stellar season, thanks to standout singles players Jake Michaels and Benito Romeo.

The Laguna Beach boys' tennis team played its first official match of the 2011 season March 1 and the first under new Coach Peter Davidson. The Breakers went to Villa Park, where they fell 11-7 to the perennial-power Spartans.

Jake Michaels won two sets at No. 1 singles (6-7, 6-2, 6-3) and the Breakers' top doubles team of Hutton McKenna and Owen Weber also won two (0-6, 6-4, 6-4). Also picking up points for Laguna were No. 2 Benito Romeo and No. 3 Teague Hamilton in singles play and the No. 2 doubles team of Austin Loomis and Morgan Lebby.

Laguna plays a 3 p.m. nonleague match today at San Clemente. Next week, the Breakers host Dana Hills on Tuesday and Corona del Mar at 3 p.m. Both nonleague matches start at 3 p.m.
