Mission Hospital CEO to step down

Peter Bastone, president and chief executive of Mission Hospital, has announced his resignation after more than a decade with the St. Joseph Health System.

He will leave Mission Hospital, which has locations in Laguna Beach and Mission Viejo, on June 30 for other opportunities.

"It is with mixed emotions that I announce my plan to resign," Bastone said in a statement. "With many of my personal and professional goals for Mission Hospital accomplished, I am excited about moving on to explore new challenges.

"At the same time, I leave behind an incredible staff, a hospital and health system that I have been proud and privileged to serve and a tremendously supportive community to which I remain deeply committed."

Bastone, 53, worked at the Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles before joining Mission Hospital in 1996.

Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Joe Randolph credited Bastone's leadership for the accolades Mission Hospital has received in the last 15 years and for giving the hospital a national recognized reputation for quality healthcare.

"A hallmark of Peter's leadership is the strong management team and quality clinicians and caregivers in place who are committed to carrying out Mission's ongoing quest for perfect care," Randolph said in a statement.

"My focus and priority is and will continue to be Mission Hospital Laguna Beach," Mission Hospital Laguna Beach Operations Vice President Michael Beck said by e-mail. "A great deal of work has been accomplished in the first 22 months; however, there are big and important plans that we have for this campus that need my full attention for the next few years."

Bastone is also chairman of the Alliance of Catholic Health Care Board of Directors, chairman of the Orange County Emergency Medial Services Committee for the Hospital Assn. of Southern California, HASC regional representative and board member, and serves on the Orange County Sheriff's Advisory Council, among other commitments to the community.

Mission Hospital has been in Laguna Beach since 2009, and offers 24 hour emergency, intensive and surgical care along with behavioral services and treatment programs.
