The Relay for Life kickoff party raised more than $1,100 and registered seven teams Thursday at [seven-degrees], according to a news release.

Chairwoman Lauren Harris announced this year's honoree and relay queen is Julie Pendleton, a Laguna Beach resident for 25 years who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer last year.

The group hopes to beat the all-time high for donations, $191,000, achieved in 2005, and register more than 38 teams. The 24-hour walking event starts Aug. 6 at El Morro Elementary School.

During the kickoff, team registration was $25. After May 31, team registration will be $125.

This year's theme is "Color a Cure." Each color represents a different cancer. Volunteers and teams can chose to fight a specific cancer by promoting the color it represents or all cancers.
