Suspect, victims' names released in early Friday hit-and-run

A suspected hit-and-run driver who allegedly killed one pedestrian and injured another in Huntington Beach was arrested in Laguna Beach early Friday, according to police.

Jason Roberts, 32, of San Juan Capistrano, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, which left one woman dead and a man in stable condition.

At 1:48 a.m., Oriana Millan, 24, of Huntington Beach, and Harlan Coffman, 25, of La Mirada, were crossing Brookhurst Street at Atlanta Avenue when they were struck by a vehicle traveling southbound, according to a news release from Huntington Beach police.

Millan was pronounced dead at the scene. Coffman was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

A broadcast went out about 2 a.m. describing the suspect's car as a metallic Toyota Camry with a male driver.

At 3:38 a.m. Laguna Beach police received an emergency call from a Stop N Go from a driver who was broken down on North Coast Highway in the Emerald Bay area, according to Laguna Beach police Lt. Jason Kravetz.

The driver said he had hit an animal in Newport Beach, and his car wouldn't operate correctly.

"One of our officers responded to the Stop N Go, and the other one secured the vehicle," Kravetz said. "It became immediately apparent to the officers that the man had hit a human being."

Kravetz said physical evidence on the car from the victim and damage to the vehicle made it evident that he had hit a person.
