1998-2000 Breakers make it five in a row

The 1998-2000 team has a monopoly on the Laguna Beach High boys' basketball alumni tournament.

The squad, despite playing without a few key players, won the annual summertime event for the fifth straight year, beating the 2008-2011 alumni team in the championship game Saturday at Dugger Gym. The 1998-2000 alums did suffer a first, however, when they lost their first-ever tournament game in a pool play matchup against the 2008-2011 team.

Laguna Beach Coach Bret Fleming said that tournament champions were led by B.J. Jameson, who was "unstoppable" in the final, and Jesse Obrand. Other key players for the 1998-2000 team were Nick Reynolds, Chase Satrappe, Justin Ives and Morgan Reynolds. The '08-'11 team was led by Dylan Roley, Marcus Hairston, Ryan Lawler and Adam Selevan, with contributions also coming from Jason House, TK Kesler and Jackie Norris.

Fleming said his upcoming varsity team "played well" in reaching the semifinals of the tournament and finished tied for third place. The big win for the varsity came in a three-overtime game against the '88-'93 team.

"It was another great day of basketball and reunions," Fleming said. "Each year seems to bring new faces and new opportunities to connect."
