Recognition of lifeguards

Three lifeguards were honored for the rescue of passengers and a pet from a powerless motorboat and keeping the drifting boat from crashing onto Aliso Beach, a county-owned beach.

The boat was about 50 yards offshore when Orange County lifeguard Tammy Lang radioed for backup before jumping into the choppy water to swim her rescue buoy to the boat's operator, who was in the water trying to tow the boat away from South Point at the 10th Street Beach.

Lang instructed the three people still on board to put on life jackets and get in the water to avoid possible injury if waves swamped the boat. She then grabbed a line attached to the boat and swam it away from the shore.

Orange County Sheriff's Harbor Patrol and Laguna Beach lifeguards were dispatched to assist in the rescue.

"Tammy kept the boat off of the beach by towing it, which bought time for backup units to come," said Orange County Lifeguards Chief Jason Young.

Lifeguard Tommy Cantrell and Marine Safety Officer Joseph Carvin V rescued the passengers and the dog that had gone into the water.

"We appreciate the recognition and the help of the Laguna beach lifeguards," Young said.

Smoking prohibited on Forest Lane, 4-1

The City Council gave preliminary approval of a prohibition on smoking at the south end of Forest Lane — the alley between Forest and Ocean avenues.

According to the Police Department, the area has become a gathering spot for smokers, which annoys some of the public.

"If it is the same people every day, just move them," said City Councilwoman Verna Rollinger, who voted against the prohibition.
