Plein Air Invitational starts Oct. 14

Laguna Art Museum and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Assn. is hosting the 14th annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational Oct. 14 to 21, according to a news release.

The event is a weeklong landscape-painting festival that focuses on the community, the environment and art education. It showcases 40 of the nation's top plein air landscape painters, the release said.

They compete for prizes and participate in festivities such as education events for kids and adults, public paint outs, and environmental awareness activities. There are also fine-art lectures and presentations. The week ends with a collectors' soirée and public sale at the museum.

The goal of the grant is to provide support for an emerging or established Laguna Beach artist so he or she can develop and present a project or program that will help Laguna Beach be recognized as a progressive arts city, according to a press release.

Deadline for applications is Feb. 8. The grant is open to both creative artists — choreographers, composers, playwrights and visual artists — as well as interpretive artists including dancers, instrumental and vocal musicians, and actors, the release said.

Three finalists will be chosen, and the winner will be announced at the Art Star Awards April 7. The winner will have 11 months to complete his or her project, and the body of work will premiere at the 2014 Art Star Awards.
