The Laguna Beach High girls' tennis team started postseason play Wednesday and a solid performance by the Breakers enabled them to continue on in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs.

Orange Coast League champion Laguna scored a 12-6 home win over El Dorado in a first-round match. The Breakers, tied for the No. 2 seed with Canyon of Anaheim in the Division 2 bracket, advance to Friday's second round, where they will travel to face La Canada.

El Dorado, the fourth-place team from the Century League, had defeated Fullerton (Freeway League No. 3) in a wild-card match Tuesday to move on to face Laguna.

The Breakers picked up seven points in singles player. Kira Hamilton, the recently crowned OCL single champion, won her two sets (6-2, 6-0) before Coach Don Davis substituted the junior out of the lineup. Davis said Hamilton has been nursing a few injuries. Iman Berri, who subbed for Hamilton, won her set, 6-4.

At No. 2 singles, Ashley Shelton won two sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, as did Ashley Fair at No. 3 (0-6, 6-0, 6-2).

"All three singles lines played really well," Davis said. "Ashley Fair had not played singles all season, so it was really nice to see her perform so well. Ashley Shelton also played well, and Kira [Hamilton] dominated her two sets.

"I also thought our doubles played well, although we lost some close sets."

In doubles action, Laguna's No. 1 team, Sarah Nederlander and Madeline Loomis, the new OCL doubles team champion, won two sets (0-6, 6-4, 6-2). At No. 3, Stephanie Tat and Malia Helms also won two sets (4-6, 7-6, 6-0).

The No. 2 team of Bailey Jaeger/Natasha Keces, won their final set (5-7, 4-6, 6-2).

Laguna, 15-4 overall, will face a La Canada team Friday that on Wednesday defeated Hacienda League champ Rowland. The Spartans finished second in the Rio Hondo League to San Marino, the top-ranked team and defending champion in Division 2.
