Laguna Beach police arrested two girls after they allegedly smoked heroin in a Laguna Beach High School restroom, Sgt. Louise Callus wrote in an email.

A campus supervisor found the Laguna Beach girls, ages 16 and 17, at 11:04 a.m. Nov. 12, Callus said, though she didn't identify the specific campus location.

Officers found 0.31 grams of heroin and released both girls to their parents, according to police.

Authorities will refer the case to Orange County's Juvenile Probation Department, which handles juvenile crime matters, Callus said.

Laguna Beach High School Principal Joanne Culverhouse sent a letter to parents notifying them of the incident.

"This appears to be an isolated incident. However, district and [school] administration are taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of all students," Culverhouse wrote. "We are developing plans to implement a Text-A-Tip hotline for students, parents and community members to anonymously report any information that would be a risk to student safety.

"While we all have the need to understand how and why this occurred, we cannot disclose further details about the particular students nor any proposed or implemented disciplinary action that has or may occur due to privacy laws. As a school and community, we need to support and guide our students in developing positive behaviors that promote their health and safety."
