Around Town: Student artists honored

The Rotary Club of Laguna Beach presented four Laguna College of Art + Design scholarships and a Student of the Semester award at its regular Friday luncheon Dec. 6 at Hotel Laguna.

The scholarship awards went to Sigmundur Porgeirsson: illustration with entertainment emphasis; Bryant Santamaria: illustration with drawing and painting emphasis; Alexis Kubicki: illustration; Paulina Michel: illustration with drawing and painting emphasis.

The Student of the Semester award was given to Mikaela Buckley: animation.

Funding for the awards comes from Rotary's annual spring fundraiser, Grapes for Grads.

Dedication to Boys & Girls Club recognized

Piero Wemyss, a Laguna Beach resident and member of the board of directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach was honored with The Eddy Award in November for his exemplary service and dedication to the club.

Wemyss has volunteered as a Boys & Girls Club board member for more than six years and is the vice president of the Boys & Girls Club's endowment committee.

He also oversees the membership and growth of The Heritage Club, which consists of people who have included a Boys & Girls Club in their will or estate plans.

The endowment committee and The Heritage Club provide a pipeline for future financial security, according to a news release.

Wemyss attends club events, fundraisers and friend raisers, and generates buzz about the club's programs, according to the release.

Named after local broadcaster Ed Arnold, The Eddy Awards are presented annually by the Orange County Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs. This prestigious honor is bestowed on exemplary volunteers, typically directors, from each Orange County club in the spirit of service and altruism.

Award-winning family business

MacGillivray Freeman Films was honored at the Orange County Business Journal's 14th annual Family Owned Business Awards ceremony in November.

MFF was one of five winners out of 51 nominees to receive a Family Owned Business Award, winning in the Small Business Category, for businesses with fewer than 50 employees.

resented by the Orange County Business Journal and Cal State Fullerton's Family Business Council, recognize family-owned businesses for their success, family involvement, and contributions to their industry and to the Orange County community.

Dana Wharf Sport Fishing, Behavioral Health Works, Rogers Gardens, and Nektar Juice Bar were also honored.
