The Laguna Beach Little League 9/10 All-Star team was eliminated Wednesday from the District 55 All-Star Tournament by Rancho Mission Viejo, which posted a 5-3 victory at Heroes Park in El Toro. Laguna had opened the tournament Saturday against defending champion Aliso Niguel. Aliso Niguel showed that it doesn't intend to give up its district crown, as it rolled to a 12-0 victory, which sent Laguna into the "Second Chance" half of the bracket. The double elimination tournament runs through July 14. Laguna Beach's 9/10 All-Star team was composed of Grifan Fair, Blake Hester, Austin Hilleman, Alex Iannotti, Cole Kessler, Brandon Lewis, Robbie McInerny, Austin Paxson, Santi Pierini, Norton Penney, Jack Pillsbury, Derek Reigel, Larry Stewart and Brian Vail.

The Laguna Beach Water Polo Age Group girls' 14-and-under team began its fall season last weekend by competing in a tournament before taking on Corona del Mar. Laguna's 14-U team played "up" Saturday, as it entered the 18-and-Under tournament Saturday at Santa Ana High. The squad was part of a field that included high school teams from Aliso Niguel, Dana Hills and Laguna Beach, and Elite Water Polo Club. In Sunday's action: 14-and-Under Division Laguna 9, Corona del Mar 2 In true age-group play, Laguna bolted to a 7-0 lead and cruised past Corona del Mar at the Laguna Beach High pool.

Its stay in the District 55 All-Star Tournament wasn't as long as it had hoped, but the experience gained by the Laguna Beach Little League 9/10 All-Star team should bode well for the future. Laguna Beach opened the tournament against defending champion Aliso Niguel, which sent Laguna into the "Second Chance" bracket after a 12-0 win. In that "Second Chance" bracket, Laguna Beach was eliminated from the double-elimination tournament by Rancho Mission Viejo, 5-3, in Lake Forest.

The 2012-13 season got underway last weekend for Laguna Beach National Junior Basketball teams, three of whom picked up opening day victories. GIRLS' NJB Division 2 Laguna Beach 31, Aliso Niguel 14: Piper Naess scored a game-high 12 points and had several steals on defense, as host Laguna registered its first win at Thurston Middle School. Molly Cohn pitched in seven points from the point position, Izzy Meekma scored six points and Evie Laptin added four points. Laguna and Aliso Niguel will face each other on Dec. 15 at Thurston Middle School.

The Laguna Beach High girls' golf team opened its season Wednesday against Sage Hill, and the Breakers dropped a 222-249 match to the Lightning at Aliso Creek Golf Course in Laguna Beach (par 32). Sophomore Leslie Dwight had the low score for Laguna at 45. She was followed by sophomore Mary Kate Quellmalz (48), junior Jackie McMahon (50), junior Jamie Hendrickson (52), junior Audrey Curtis (54) and junior Hailey Quigley (59). "The girls made good decisions and managed their games well, so overall we are pleased with their effort," Laguna assistant coach Sean Quigley said.

Laguna Blues, a girls' under-12 team in Laguna Beach AYSO soccer, turned in an outstanding regular season by improving each match and advancing to the semifinal round of the AYSO 11-L South Orange County Tournament of Champions. The team, which received a wild-card berth to the tournament, nearly reached the division's championship match but had its title hopes ended in a close, 1-0 loss to Mission Viejo. The 11-L tournament started Dec. 7-8 and concluded Sunday (Dec. 15) at the San Juan Capistrano Sportspark.

Tickets are on sale for the fifth annual food and wine event that benefits activities at Aliso Niguel High School, according to a news release. The Taste of Aliso Niguel will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Summit Office Campus, 101 Enterprise, Aliso Viejo. The annual event, organized by Parents for Aliso Niguel, raises money for school activities, booster clubs and facilities. Tickets are $35, and individual clubs will keep $25 from each ticket sold. Dozens of local restaurants will offer tastes of their fare at the event, which also includes live music by Tony Guerrero and a silent auction.

The CIF Southern Section office released its preseason rankings for boys' water polo and girls' volleyball Monday. Defending-champion Laguna was voted the top-rated team in Division 3 boys' water polo heading into the 2011 season and the girls' volleyball team, which last year reached the semifinals in Division 1-A, is ranked third. Laguna heads the Division 3 water polo poll and is followed by Damien, Aliso Niguel, Capistrano Valley, Mira Costa, La Canada, Palos Verdes, Peninsula, South Pasadena and Tesoro.

The Laguna Beach High baseball team begins play today at the Newport-Elks Tournament, as Breakers spring sports have officially sprung into action. The Breakers are in the Costa Mesa bracket of the annual tournament, in Pool A with Cerritos, Orange and Savanna. They open their season at 3 p.m. today at home against Cerritos. They continue in the tournament Saturday, playing at Savanna at 10 a.m., then have their final pool-play game at 3 p.m. Monday at home against Orange. Tournament play continues Wednesday and March 12. Orange Coast League rival Costa Mesa is also in the Costa Mesa bracket, but in Pool B. Among sports that have already gotten underway, the Laguna Beach boys?
