Laguna Beach resident Whitney Pavlik and partner Stacy Rouwenhorst finished tied for ninth over the weekend at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Crocs Tour Riverside Open. Pavlik and Rouwenhorst, seeded No. 14, won their first winner?s bracket match against No. 19 Gabriela Roney and Lenka Urbanova, 21-17, 21-15. But the duo then lost in the next round to No. 3-seeded Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan, 21-19, 20-22, 15-11. Pavlik and Rouwenhorst then won a pair of three-game contender?

For the fourth time in five tournaments during the 2004 Assn. of Volleyball Professional Nissan Series, former Laguna Beach High athlete Dain Blanton and teammate Jeff Nygaard have finished third. The duo advanced last Sunday to the semifinal round of the Manhattan Beach Open, where they fell to the team of Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings, 15-21, 23-21, 13-15. It was the pair's fourth, three-game match in a row. Blanton and Nygaard won five matches, overall, and both of their losses came to Fuerbringer and Jennings.

Following a four-week layoff due to the Summer Olympic Games, the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) Crocs Tour continues today with Crocs Cup Shootout beach volleyball tournament at Mason, Ohio. The event concludes Sunday. Rachel Wacholder (Laguna Beach High, 1993) and partner Tyra Turner (Fort Myers Beach, Fla.) will be out to win their second tournament on the 2008 tour. The pair captured their first AVP tourney title this year when they won the Crocs Slam San Diego on Aug. 3. That tournament was the last AVP event before the start of the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Laguna Beach's Rachel Wacholder and partner Angie Akers finished in a tie for ninth-place at last weekend's San Diego Open, the sixth stop on the 2004 Assn. Of Volleyball Professionals Nissan Series. Wacholder and Akers, the women's sixth-seed, lost to No. 11 seed Tanya Fuamata/Heidi Ilustre, 21-17, 19-21, 12-15, in winner's bracket play. Prior to that loss, the pair opened the tournament with a 21-17, 21-11 win over No. 20 seed Kristen Schritter/Helen Reale in Contender's Bracket action.

Blanton, Baxter tie at Chicago Open Dain Blanton (Laguna Beach High, Class of 1990) and partner Paul Baxter won one match and tied for 17th place in the men's tournament of the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals' Chicago Open. The tournament began Aug. 2 and concluded Sunday with finals play in the men's and women's divisions. Blanton and Baxter, seeded 15th, dropped their first match in winner's bracket play, losing a hotly-contested match to No. 18 Scott Davenport/Chad Turner, 20-22, 24-22, 21-23.

It's been a different type of season for Rachel (Wacholder) Scott on the national Assn. of Volleyball Professionals beach volleyball tour, but it will conclude this weekend for the former Laguna Beach High athlete on familiar sand. Scott, a 1993 graduate of Laguna Beach, will close out the tour when she and playing partner Jen Kessy vie for the women's title at the smart AVP Championships at Huntington Beach. The four-day tournament, the last of seven stops on the 2013 AVP Tour, started Thursday and concludes with women's and men's championship finals Sunday at the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

Finally, that first tour title. Former Laguna Beach High athlete Rachel Wacholder and playing partner Tyra Turner (Fort Myers Beach, FLA.) captured their first tournament title on the 2008 Crocs Tour by winning the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) Crocs Slam San Diego on Sunday. Wacholder and Turner, seeded fifth, defeated the No. 2 seeded team of Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan, 21-16, 19-21, 15-10, in the title match. Wacholder is a 1993 graduate of Laguna Beach High.
