HUNTINGTON BEACH ? With friends and family watching her every move over the weekend, it seemed like a good occasion for Whitney Pavlik to have one of her best tournaments of the year. The Laguna Beach resident delivered at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Huntington Beach Open, tying her best result of the season as she tied for ninth place on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier. Pavlik and partner Stacy Rouwenhorst were seeded 12th, but they delivered an upset Friday afternoon in the winner?

Former Laguna Beach High girls' volleyball standout Rachel Wacholder and her Assn. Of Professional Volleyball teammate, Elaine Youngs, finished second last weekend at the AVP Chicago Open. Wacholder and Youngs, seeded second, reached the women's final where they fell to No. 1-seed Kerri Walsh/Misty May-Treanor, 21-14, 21-15. It was the duo's fourth, second-place finish in 10 AVP tournaments during the current Crocs Tour. They earned a split of $18,000 for their runner-up finish.

In the final Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Croc Tour event of the 2008 season, Rachel Wacholder (Laguna Beach High, 1993) and partner Tyra Turner (Fort Myers Beach, Fla.) advanced to the fourth round of Contender?s Bracket play before being eliminated from title contention for the women?s tournament crown at the Manhattan Beach Open on Sunday. The pair, the No. 7 seed in the tournament, forfeited their fourth-round match to the No. 12 team of sisters Katie and Tracy Lindquist of Huntington Beach.

Rachel Wacholder (Laguna Beach High, 1993) and playing partner Tyra Turner reached the quarterfinal round of the women?s tournament of the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Crocs Tour Chicago Open last weekend. Wacholder and Turner, the No. 8-seed in the event, won three of their first four matches before being eliminated by the No. 7-seeded team of Dianne DeNecochea/Barbra Fontana, 21-11, 22-20. Wacholder and Turner began the weekend with a pair of winner?s-bracket victories, defeating No. 27 Kristen Batt/Megan Wallin (21-12, 21-17)

First summer soccer camps set Laguna Beach High School Summer Camps is offering three sessions for local youth this year. The first session is a girls' camp (Camp I) and will run June 25-29. Daily sessions are 8 to 11 a.m. at Laguna Beach High. A second session, a boys' camp (Camp II), will be held July 9-13 from 9 a.m. to noon, also at the school. The final session is open to both boys and girls (Camp III), includes special tournament-style training and will be held July 23-27.

Former Laguna Beach High girls' volleyball standout Rachel Wacholder and her teammate, Elaine Youngs, finished in a third-place tie last weekend at the Assn. Of Volleyball Professional's Birmingham-Hoover Open in Hoover, Al. The No. 2-ranked team of Wacholder and Youngs have reached the semifinal round in each of the nine tournaments played in the 2006 AVP Crocs Tour. The duo earned $8,500 for the third-place finish. In winner's bracket play, Wacholder and Youngs defeated No. 31 Elsa Binder/Charnette Fair, 21-12, 21-15, the No. 18 team of Ann Windes/Saralyn Smith, 21-10, 21-13, No. 7 Carrie Dodd/Barbra Fontana, 22-20, 21-19 and survived No. 3 Nicole Branagh/Holly McPeak, 22-20, 21-18, to advance to the semifinal round.

Mike Sciacca Two Laguna Beach High alums nearly took center stage at the Huntington Beach Open last weekend at the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier. Dain Blanton, Class of 1990, and teammate Jeff Nygaard advanced to the men's semifinals where they suffered a tough, 19-21, 21-16, 17-19 loss to eventual champion Jason Ring and George Roumain. Rachel Wacholder, Class of 1993, and Angie Akers, playing for the first time as a team, reached the women's semifinals where they were eliminated by eventual champion Misty May and Kerri Walsh, 15-21, 16-21.
