At 7 p.m. Friday, a showdown for the early lead in the Orange Coast League championship race will go down at Jim Scott Stadium, where Laguna Beach travels to face Estancia. The game pits teams ranked in the CIF Southern Section Southern Division top 10 poll. It's the No. 3 Breakers (5-0-1) vs. the Eagles (4-2), who are tied for the No. 10 spot. In the preseason Southern Division rankings, Estancia was No. 3 and Laguna No. 4. For all the ramifications Friday's game holds, Laguna Coach Mike Churchill said thoughts about the game weren't mentioned until Saturday, the day after the Breakers started their league journey with a 49-6 victory over Saddleback.

It's been a busy week for the Laguna Beach High football team, which had just three practice days to prepare for another Orange Coast League opponent. Six days after opening league play against Estancia, the Breakers took on Calvary Chapel on Thursday night. The score from that game wasn't available at press time. Last week, Laguna suffered its first defeat of the season when defending league champion Estancia scored a 35-14 victory in the Breakers' homecoming game at Guyer Field.

The Laguna Beach football team might be rolling along at 5-0, but on Friday it's the start of a whole new season. And it's the most important part of the 2011 campaign. This is the week that the Orange Coast League race begins, where all five league members start out on equal footing. Laguna begins its quest for an OCL championship at 7 p.m. at Guyer Field. To get to the top of the heat, one team the Breakers will need to get past is Estancia, the league's defending champion.
