Family in tow, novelist and Coastline Pilot columnist Sherwood Kiraly is on his way to one of the biggest nights of his life. In Utah. “It’s kind of a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” he said. A film made of his novel, “Diminished Capacity,” will premiere at the Sundance Festival on Monday. “I’m really proud of it,” Kiraly said. The film stars Matthew Broderick, Alan Alda and Virginia Madsen. Kiraly heard the news that the film was accepted into the prestigious festival in late November and immediately booked a place to stay in Park City.

In a real hometown effort, Laguna’s Sherwood Kiraly is teaming up with Gallimaufry Performing Arts. “Scared Money” — a new light-hearted comedy play about six people in search of a hidden Santa Anita Pick Six racetrack ticket worth $714,000 — premieres at 8 tonight at the Forum Theatre on the Festival of Arts grounds. The play, written by the playwright, novelist, screenwriter and Coastline Pilot columnist, will be performed by the Gallimaufry Performing Arts repertory company, and will run through April 18. And Kiraly isn’t just behind the scenes, he’s also on stage.

The Friends of the Laguna Beach Library welcomed Orange County Public Library Director of Construction and Maintenance Bob Genzel Bob Genzel to the annual Membership Dinner, held recently at Tivoli Terrace. “He is our new best friend,” said Martha Lydick , perennial president of the local group. Genzel was the man who produced a new air conditioner within a week when the unit at the Friends Bookstore went on the fritz. “That’s really fast for the county,” Lydick said.
