Maybe writing letters to the editor really does make a difference — as in Don Romero's letter a few weeks ago (Sounding Off, Coastline Pilot, July 21) regarding litter on our beaches, and more specifically Thalia Street beach. Thalia Street beach is the hangout for young Laguna Beach locals and it's incredibly sad that they litter the beach where they spend so much of their time. Today, Thalia Street beach was as clean as I have seen it in months. For months I had meant to write about this problem and was more than thrilled to see another resident of Laguna Beach write about it. The question remains, how can people and/or kids litter the very place that they come back to every day?

The Laguna Community Concert Band will present a mini free concert from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the Fred Lang Park Mosaic Bowl, 21540 Wesley Dr. The concert will consist of ensemble presentations by the band's woodwind trio, flute ensemble, saxophone combo and jazz set. Each group will play 15 minutes of music — from classical to jazz — within the mosaic-decorated alcoves of the bowl. In 2004, the Arts Commission commissioned artists to work with community members to cover the cement walls in the Lang Park Bowl with pieces of ceramics and mosaics.

They came armed with leather-bound journals, computer printouts and yellow legal pads. Under the spin of a disco ball, in a lounge filled with plush velvet couches and poufs, local poets gathered for an event unusual to Laguna — a poetry slam. "Poetry needs a foundation — needs a stage — in Laguna Beach," said Rick Conkey, organizer of the event. "Although there have been poetry societies here before, there's been nothing on a major level." So Terrell Washington Anansi brought his "Street Testimonies" performance art to Club M last Thursday as part of the weekly Help Blue Water benefit series.
