A break from the Orange Coast League schedule might have been just what the doctor ordered for the Laguna Beach High baseball team. Sure, the Breakers had to use precious spring break days playing in the Anaheim Lions Tournament. But they got a bit of their mojo back in the tournament, finishing with a 3-2 record after topping Western High, 10-2, on Wednesday. ?We played very well together as a group over the week,? A different kind of pageant was staged Wednesday at the Irvine Bowl. Instead of hosting meticulously costumed volunteers posing amid classic works of art, the Festival of Arts/Pageant of the Masters venue became the setting for a mock investigation of weapons of mass destruction. The scenario included camouflage-clad National Guardsmen and Civil Support Team members stationed at Los Alamitos, Orange County hazardous materials units, and Laguna Beach firefighters and police. They were gathered for a training exercise in preparation for a full-scale certification drill next week in Santa Barbara, said Keith Haviland of the Ninth Civil Support Team unit.

I read with interest the letter written by Eileen Garcia (Mailbag, Feb. 24) where she tells us Barbara Diamond, a Coastline Pilot reporter, is somehow "obsessed with the Minutemen" because she covered the story of the Orange County Superior Court's denial of the Minuteman Project's application to be in our Patriots Day parade. The Minuteman Project is a vigilante organization that practices racial profiling, interferes with people's right to travel and right to be free of illegal seizure guaranteed to everyone by our United States Constitution and State Constitution.

About a year ago, I noticed small clumps of white bubbles attached to the green stems of California sagebrush ( Artemisia californica ) on the coastal bluffs in La Jolla. This year, in Riverside, the ornamental rosemary bushes on the UC campus and in town sport the same white masses. Many years ago, someone thought the clumps of bubbles looked like spittle. The developing insects inside the bubbles then became known as spittlebugs. Spittlebugs are sucking insects, related to leafhoppers, aphids and scale bugs.
