CLAREMONT — Light rain, and some lightning to go along with it in the distance. The weather Wednesday didn’t seem normal for Southern California in early June, and the beach kids from the Laguna Beach High boys’ tennis team didn’t have to worry about hot temperatures at The Claremont Club. But it was top-seeded Cerritos that felt right at home in the CIF Southern Section Division IV championship match, defending its CIF title by routing the Breakers, 15-3.

CLAREMONT — Cerritos had been there before, and Laguna Beach hadn’t. That point was pounded home early and often in the CIF Southern Section Division IV boys’ tennis title match Wednesday at The Claremont Club. Cerritos’ school nickname fit like a glove as the Dons defended last year’s CIF title, while breaks of serve were rare for the Breakers. The score might have been a bit lopsided, at 15-3, but Laguna Beach shouldn’t feel too bad. Cerritos didn’t lose a match all year.

At about 10 a.m. Friday, Kathryn Poet boarded a bus for Santa Barbara. The junior and her Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy softball teammates were headed to Dos Pueblos High, the site of the Tologs' first CIF Southern Section playoff appearance since joining the Mission League. Once the Tologs stepped onto the field, Poet did what she's done all year. She was an exemplary leader. She occupied the top of the order and added to her team-best totals in several offensive categories.
