Laguna Beach High track and field junior Blake Hofmeister has qualified for today?s CIF Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College in the boys? 3,200 meters. Hofmeister ran the race in 9 minutes, 14.49 seconds at the CIF Southern Section Division III finals Saturday. That placed him fifth in Division III, and he took the last of 12 available spots for the Masters meet. The top five finishers at Masters advance to the CIF State meet, scheduled for June 5-6 at Buchanan High in Clovis.

Natasha Strickland ran into the Laguna Beach High record book Saturday with a standout performance at the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Championships at Cerritos College in Norwalk. Strickland, a sophomore, ran an 11 minutes 6 seconds in the girls' Division IV 3,200 meters, good for fourth place. Her time bettered by seven seconds the previous record of 11:13, also held by Strickland. "I thought Natasha was capable of improving on her school record time, I just didn't know how much," said Laguna girls' Coach Steve Lalim, who missed the finals meet.

But for all three members of the Laguna Beach High track and field program, they say there is no luster loss, no nonchalant approach, when it comes to competing at the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Prelims. All three athletes have qualified for today's Division II event at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. The top finishers from preliminary competition move on to the Southern Section division finals, set for May 24 at Cerritos College in Norwalk.

Laguna Beach High athletes turned in both record and personal-best times Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Division 4 finals at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. Coco Putnam set a new school-record time in the girls' 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.22 seconds. The freshman placed sixth, overall, in the event. The girls' 4x400 relay team, Janie Crawford, Putnam, sophomore Natalie Kimball and junior Brielle Budroe, finished fifth with a time of 4:00.60 which Coach Steve Lalim said was the second-fastest time in program history and less than one second off the school record.

Laguna Beach High juniors Blake Hofmeister and Tommy Newton-Neal were the only Breakers to advance Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Division III preliminaries at Estancia High. Both athletes will compete Saturday at the finals at Cerritos College. Hofmeister qualified second in the 3,200 meters with a time of 9 minutes, 22.02 seconds. Coach Scott Wittkop said it wasn?t a bad time for Hofmeister. ?He?s run faster,? Wittkop said. ?It was one of those things where he wanted to move on. He ran a 9:17 at the OC Championships.

Two Laguna Beach High athletes, Natasha Strickland and Tyler Nichols, earned top finishes Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Division 4 Track and Field finals at Cerritos College in Norwalk. Strickland had a fifth-place finish in the girls' 3,200 meters. The junior finished with a time of 11 minutes 17.20 seconds. Chadwick senior Jaye Buchbinder won the race in 10:48.17. Nichols, a sophomore, finished in seventh place in the boys' 800 meters with a time of 2:00.30. Connor Reck, a senior at Santa Ynez, won the event in 1:53.84.

Laguna Beach High's run toward a CIF-Southern Section Division IV boys' track-and-field championship came up just short Saturday at Cerritos College in Norwalk. Despite outstanding efforts in both running and fielding events, the Breakers finished second to Oaks Christian in the boys' Division IV competition. Oaks Christian won the division with 64 points. Laguna, meanwhile, scored 61 points and captured the CIF-SS runner-up plaque. La Salle was in third place with 60 points.

At about 10 a.m. Friday, Kathryn Poet boarded a bus for Santa Barbara. The junior and her Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy softball teammates were headed to Dos Pueblos High, the site of the Tologs' first CIF Southern Section playoff appearance since joining the Mission League. Once the Tologs stepped onto the field, Poet did what she's done all year. She was an exemplary leader. She occupied the top of the order and added to her team-best totals in several offensive categories.

NORWALK — Andrew Steben expected nothing less. The St. Francis High senior entered Saturday's CIF Southern Section Track and Field Championships at Cerritos College as the favorite to take home the Division III title in the pole vault. And that's exactly what he did. Steben won the division title by recording a personal-best leap of 15 feet 6, a foot higher than Atascadero's A.J. Teunissen and Temple City's Hoku Hu, who tied for second. "I was pretty sure I could win the title," Steben said.

Five Laguna Beach High track and field athletes will compete Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Championships. The Division IV competition begins at 11 a.m. with field events, with running events to start at 1 p.m. The finals are at Cerritos College in Norwalk. Girls Sophomore Natasha Strickland was a double-qualifier for the girls? Division IV final, but will compete only in the 3,200 meters. Strickland won her heat in the 3,200 (11 minutes 16 seconds)
