WALNUT — Second place isn’t always a reason to celebrate, but the Laguna Beach High girls’ swim team was all smiles Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Division III swim finals. When second place equates to the best finish the Breakers have ever had at CIF, it was easy to understand why. Laguna Beach, which had finished as high as 10th in Division II in recent years, totaled 195 points, second to only Palm Desert (253). The Laguna Beach boys finished 14th.

For as tremendous the journey has been to date, the season now comes down to a single game for the Laguna Beach High girls' water polo team. The Breakers have reached their ultimate destination, the William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center in Irvine but not yet, they say, their ultimate goal. It's been a simple goal, to win a CIF Southern Section championship, but never an easy one. The Breakers, the target of many a team in 2014, have put themselves to do just that. Top-seeded Laguna will return to the Woollett Center Saturday for its final game of the season, the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship final, three days after the Breakers took care of Los Alamitos, 12-5, at the same pool site they have been working and fighting toward to reach at the end the season.

One down, three to go. The top-ranked Laguna Beach girls' water polo team began its bid for a CIF Southern Section championship Wednesday by taking on Marina. The Breakers once again bolted to a big, early lead and went on to overwhelm, as they have many a previous opponent, the visiting Vikings, 23-5, in a first-round Division 1 game. Laguna faced a 20-win Marina squad that was enjoying a breakout season. But the Breakers made quick work of the Vikings (20-10), the fourth-place team from the Sunset League and an at-large entry to the playoffs.

Before the Orange Coast League girls' water polo season got underway last month, Laguna Beach, for many a good reason, was dubbed the odds-on favorite to sprint away with the league championship. Well, that league season came to a close Wednesday and the Breakers not only met those odds, they obliterated them. The top-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 1 stepped on the pedal early against visiting Costa Mesa, steadily built an insurmountable lead, and accelerated to a 23-1 victory that capped another undefeated run (4-0)

Prior to the start of the 2014 Holiday Cup, Laguna Beach High Coach Ethan Damato called the two-day event one of the "premiere" girls' water polo tournaments. It was also one of the major tournament titles, he said, that had eluded the Laguna program throughout the years. That changed Saturday at Newport Harbor High. In a key matchup of the season between the two of the top-ranked teams in CIF Southern Section Division 1, No. 1 Laguna defeated No. 3-ranked and tournament co-host Newport Harbor, 11-8.

A season-long goal came to fruition Saturday for the Laguna Beach High girls' and boys' cross-country teams. The Breakers had set their sights on reaching the CIF State Championships in Fresno, and both teams achieved that goal. Both, also, wanted to make the podium, a spot reserved for the top-finishing teams in each division at State. The Breakers can put a check mark in that box, as well. Both Laguna teams ran to a runner-up State finish in the Division 4 final, each earning second place and a coveted trophy presentation spot on the podium at Woodward Park.
