Artist Greg Spalenka has joined the Laguna College of Art & Design as the new professor of fantasy art. Classes began Monday. The course is an advanced and comprehensive study of fantasy art as it relates to the entertainment and print media fields, Jennifer Daniels, media relations manager for the college, said. ?Science fiction and fantasy art will be studied and its context through historic and contemporary periods. Students will conceptualize, design and produce fantastic and fictional content using a variety of drawing and painting methods.

Vintage trunk show will be Thursday Macalistaire, at 1850 S. Coast Hwy., will host a vintage trunk show from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday that will feature two local designers, champagne and appetizers, owner Rachiel Macalistaire said. Designer Jenna Petrotta, who works with vintage textiles and has created wearable pieces from old scarves, will show her collection of color-enriched, bohemian clothing. ?She takes vintage slips and dyes and soaks them to enrich the colors,?

Suzie Harrison As part of the curriculum, and to enhance the students' experience of learning, the Laguna College of Art and Design offers lectures and exhibitions at the college from experts in their fields. From the middle of this month through March 18, the exhibit "From Concept to Realization: A Retrospective of Carol Kieffer Police," is on display with a lecture by Police from 3 to 5 p.m. on March 4. There will be an artist reception from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on March 8. Police is a visual development artist and art director who works extensively with Disney Animation.

I'm an artist. I have had a studio in my home on Sun Valley Drive since 1974. I have taught at the Laguna College of Art + Design and shown my work at the Laguna Museum of Art, and am actively exhibiting my work in Orange County, Los Angeles and elsewhere in the U.S. and abroad. Although I support the concept of artist live-work, I oppose this project because it is too big and at the wrong location. It will change the character of the canyon and have a negative effect on the Sun Valley neighborhood.

Re: "The first 3,999 miles are the best," Coastline Pilot, Nov. 1. Far from being a "fizzled finale," the last line of "4000 Miles" provides perfect resolution. Because the audience has been caught up in the plot, we don't realize that what we've been watching is a carefully crafted portrait of Vera. Her blunt but honest comment about her neighbor describes Vera herself and her impact on her "stone" of a grandson. "She was a pain in the ass, but she could make things grow.
