OK, you knew that there might be some type of letdown on Tuesday (Oct. 16) at Dugger Gym. In three of the previous four days prior to Tuesday’s match against Calvary Chapel, the Laguna Beach girls’ volleyball team had gone through a gantlet of games, playing five intense, best-of-three matches against some of the top programs in the state. First, the Breakers competed at the two-day Torrey Pines California Challenge. On Monday, they played a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown against rival and second-ranked Corona del Mar. With that three-day slugfest behind them, the Breakers came back Tuesday to host Calvary Chapel, an Orange Coast League rival they were favored to beat.

It was a long time coming. Twenty-one years, to be exact. The Laguna Beach High football team exorcised a few postseason demons Nov. 20 at the Santa Ana Bowl, where the Breakers defeated the Santa Ana Saints, 39-14, in a first-round game of the CIF Southern Section Southern Division playoffs. That playoff victory was the first for the program in postseason play since Nov. 20, 1987, when the then-Artists won at home against Elsinore, 28-21. You have to go back even further than that ?

The win sends the second-ranked Breakers to Saturday's Division 2 final at 4 p.m. at Cypress College against No. 1-ranked Corona del Mar. The Sea Kings defeated Trabuco Hills, 3-0, in Tuesday's other semifinal match-up.

The Laguna Beach girls? soccer team ended its winter break on a rare high, hoping that the feat will lead to big things during play in the Orange Coast League. What a way to start a revival. Returning to play a full season of varsity softball for the first time in three years, Laguna Beach was hungry for action. The Breakers launched their 2011 campaign March 2 and scored a 13-7 nonleague victory over Connelly. On Tuesday, they scored an even bigger win. The Breakers went to Corona del Mar to take on their rival down the road, a game that originally was scheduled for the new playing field at Thurston Middle School but forced by remnants of recent rains to be moved to CdM. The site switch mattered little to Laguna, which came away with a 7-5 win. Laguna, a Division 5 school, knocked off the Division 2 Sea Kings.
