The 1st Annual Afghan Cultural Fundraising Festival and Feast with highly acclaimed guest speaker Masaru Emoto, author of the best-seller Messages from Water, will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, at Khyber Pass — Fine Rugs and Collectables Galley and Cultural Center, 1970 Pacific Coast Highway (at Diamond Street). Dr. Leonard Horowitz, outspoken human health rights advocate and author of more than 15 books on controversial health issues and spiritual wellness, will join Dr. Emoto, whose work was featured in the hit independent film “What the Bleep Do We Know?

Crystal Cove State Park is inviting the public to an open house and dedication on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the new Historic District visitor centers and educational exhibits. The free event is hosted by Crystal Cove Alliance, the park?s nonprofit cooperating association partner. Activities will include a guided Historic District walking tour, a plein air painting demonstration by a local artist and tours of the new visitor center cottages. Tide pool exploration, picnicking and whale watching from the cultural center patio deck are also available.

The following is from the Oct. 22 meeting of the Laguna Beach Arts Commission. Cultural arts center suggested Commissioner Pat Kollenda proposed allocating part of the Business Improvement District funds to a trust fund for a town cultural arts center. The center would include affordable artist work space. Kollenda suggested contacting the Athens Group regarding locating the center at Aliso Creek. Several community members and a city official spoke about the proposal during public comment.

In response to Mr. Christy's letter to the editor ("Keeping the council candidate honest," Coastline Pilot, Aug. 27, I believe my neighbor needs to check his facts. Mr. Christy asserts that the City Council cannot increase our property taxes and blames me for leading the Laguna Beach resident astray. The fact is that the City Council has the legal authority—and exercised the authority—to raise each and every property owner's taxes on April 20 of this year. How's that for logic in the middle of a global recession?

Middle East is topic at Fellowship Elye Pitts, an expert on Middle Eastern Affairs, will speak on the topic, "From Ramallah and Jerusalem to Teheran and Kabul: Waging Peace in the Middle East," at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Pitts, a resident of Laguna Beach, is a long-term observer of events and issues in the Middle East. He has written numerous articles and has been called upon to present on economic growth and socioeconomic developments in the Region.
