The 2009 Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Crocs Tour kicks off this weekend, with the opening event the Panama City Beach Open in Florida. Laguna Beach High product Rachel Wacholder will be someone to watch on the women?s side. Wacholder, 33, played in 12 tournaments last year with partner Tyra Turner. They earned top-three finishes five times, including winning the San Diego event in August. The women?s game this year may be more competitive at the top, with the all-everything pair of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh expected to take the year off for family time.

Rachel Wacholder and Dain Blanton both grew up in Laguna Beach. Both starred at Laguna Beach High. And, both are happy to be back close to their hometown, competing in the Huntington Beach Open. But there’s one aspect of their lives that they don’t have in common. Blanton’s been to the Olympics twice, winning gold in 2000. The 36-year-old’s career is winding down. Walcholder, 32, on the other hand, is in heavy pursuit of making the Olympics. The seven-time tournament winner, who is competing for one of three available spots in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, will play alongside Tyra Turner in the Huntington Beach Open today and Saturday.

The Huntington Beach Open, the Assn. of Volleyball Professional first Southern California stop of the year, continues today at Huntington Beach Pier. Today?s main draw action begins at 8 a.m., and also on Saturday, when the men?s final will take place at 1:30 p.m. and women?s title match at 3 p.m. The Cuervo Gold Crown Series Final will take place on Sunday, the men?s final at 1:30 p.m. and the women?s final at 3 p.m. In addition to Laguna Beach High products Rachel Wacholder and Dain Blanton, the Huntington Beach Open will feature Olympic hopefuls Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, as well as the top-seeded women?

Laguna Beach's Rachel Wacholder and partner Angie Akers finished in a tie for ninth-place at last weekend's San Diego Open, the sixth stop on the 2004 Assn. Of Volleyball Professionals Nissan Series. Wacholder and Akers, the women's sixth-seed, lost to No. 11 seed Tanya Fuamata/Heidi Ilustre, 21-17, 19-21, 12-15, in winner's bracket play. Prior to that loss, the pair opened the tournament with a 21-17, 21-11 win over No. 20 seed Kristen Schritter/Helen Reale in Contender's Bracket action.

The Assn. of Volleyball Professionals' Crocs Tour returns to the southland Thursday with the Manhattan Beach Open. Laguna Beach High alums Rachel Wacholder (1993) and Dain Blanton (1990) will compete in the women's and men's events respectively. Qualifier-round competition begins Thursday at the south side of the Manhattan Beach pier. The main draw competition starts Aug. 11 and continues both Aug. 12 and Aug. 13. Wacholder and Blanton will not begin competing until Fri., Aug. 11. The men's final is Sat., Aug. 12 and the women's final is Sun., Aug. 13. Both finals will be televised by NBC. Wacholder, who lives in Redondo Beach, and teammate Elaine Youngs are the No. 2 seed in the women's tournament, behind No. 1-ranked Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh.

Stephanie Darnall and Xander Olson of Laguna Beach High will play tonight in the 29th annual Dave Mohs Memorial Orange County High School Volleyball All-Star Games at Newport Harbor High School. The girls' match will be played at 6 p.m., followed at approximately 7:30 p.m. by the boys' match. Admission to the event is $5 and a silent auction will be held at the matches which are being used as a fundraiser for cancer research for Hoag Cancer Center on behalf of the late Dave Mohs.

Three-time Olympic Gold medalist Karch Kiraly of San Clemente and partner Brent Doble of Dana Point captured the Assn. Of Volleyball Professionals Nissan Series Huntington Beach Open men's title with a 21-16, 21-16 victory over Todd Rogers (Solvang) and Sean Scott (Los Angeles) Sunday at the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier. In the women's final played Saturday, the top-seeded team of Misty May (Long Beach) and Kerri Walsh (Saratoga) defeated No. 2 seed Holly McPeak (Manhattan Beach)

Laguna Beach grad honored Special Olympics Orange County will honor the achievements and excellence of U.S. Olympians and Special Olympics athletes today with its third annual celebration dinner, 'Olympians on Parade,' at the Disneyland Hotel. The highlight of the event is the Parade of Champions with U.S. Olympians escorted by Orange County Special Olympics athletes. This year's U.S. Olympians honored include Laguna Beach High graduate Dain Blanton, who won a gold medal in men's beach volleyball at the 2000 Games in Sydney.

For the fourth time in five tournaments during the 2004 Assn. of Volleyball Professional Nissan Series, former Laguna Beach High athlete Dain Blanton and teammate Jeff Nygaard have finished third. The duo advanced last Sunday to the semifinal round of the Manhattan Beach Open, where they fell to the team of Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings, 15-21, 23-21, 13-15. It was the pair's fourth, three-game match in a row. Blanton and Nygaard won five matches, overall, and both of their losses came to Fuerbringer and Jennings.

Laguna Beach's Dain Blanton teamed with Jeff Nygaard of Los Angeles last weekend to win the men's title at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Aquafina Shootout presented by Bud Light in Las Vegas. Blanton and Nygaard, seeded seventh, defeated No. 5 seed Scott Ayakatubby and Brian Lewis, 21-13, 21-19 in Saturday's final, which was the final men's match of the 2003 AVP Nissan Series. Blanton finished the men's championship match final with nine kills, seven digs and four aces.
