Salt Creek Beach served as the battleground between rivals Laguna Beach and Dana Hills high schools Thursday morning for the final team competition of the season. The last time these two teams met was in October, when Laguna had taken undefeated Dana Hills’ powerful men’s shortboard division in a noteworthy and exciting upset. Both share Salt Creek as their “home court” for practice and competition, so bragging rights were definitely on the line as many of these competitors see each other out in the lineup daily.

In a game that had several twists and turns, needed extra time to decide and went down to a few frantic seconds, the Laguna Beach High boys' basketball team discovered something about itself in the early stages of the season: its resilience. Laguna withstood a late rally in regulation by visiting Dana Hills, then came up with big plays in overtime, to clip the Dolphins, 67-65, in a nonleague game Wednesday at Dugger Gym. The Breakers showed their moxie after letting a seven-point lead evaporate in the final 67 seconds of regulation, twice fell behind in overtime, yet went on to win their fourth game to improve to 4-2. The game was the home opener of the 2012-13 season for the Breakers.

Team speed could pay dividends in the 2013-14 season for the Laguna Beach High boys' soccer team. Coach Dan Richards' squad features a youthful lineup but includes talent down the roster. A challenging nonleague schedule continues through the first week of January, and Laguna begins its 10-game Orange Coast League schedule Jan. 15. "This year's team is very young with us carrying more sophomores than seniors," Richards said.
