The home debut of the Laguna Beach High girls' basketball team was a huge success Tuesday as the defensive-minded Breakers routed Dana Hills, 64-40, in nonleague play. Stellar performances from Brittany Clark and Claire Bevacqua saw Bevacqua lead Laguna with 23 points, six steals, six rebounds, three blocks and five assists, while Clark scored 22 points to go along with seven assists and six rebounds. Freshman Tess Grogan chipped in eight points and three steals and senior Andrea Ventura had nine rebounds and a pair of steals.

The Laguna Beach High girls' volleyball team got its season off to a hot start by defeating Dana Hills and Sage Hill in a pair of home matches at Dugger Gymnasium. In their season opener, the Breakers swept Dana Hills, 25-13, 25-21, 26-24. Stephanie Parnell had 17 kills -- including eight in the second game -- eight digs and three service aces in the match. Dana Hutchinson had 15 kills and five digs, Joy Henderson had eight digs and three aces and Paige Obradovich recorded 26 setting assists.

Laguna Beach High has announced the schedules for its six fall athletic teams. Each week leading up to the start of the fall prep season, the Coastline Pilot will print two fall sports schedules. A shift in the Laguna Beach High lineup Tuesday proved to be beneficial for the Breakers, who defeated nonleague rival Dana Hills, 10-0, in girls' tennis action at Dana Hills. Top singles player Claire Rietsch and Katie Ochwat, who usually plays doubles but played Tuesday at No. 3 singles, earned sweeps to help get the Breakers past a determined Dolphins squad. Jackie Reed and Kellie Ammerman won two of three at No. 1 doubles for the Breakers. Previously, Laguna opened its 2003 campaign with a 15-3 win over Woodbridge.

In the first week of the 2003 season, the Laguna Beach High baseball team has had the outcome of its first two games decided in the seventh inning. Trailing Bolsa Grande on Tuesday by a 5-4 count, the Breakers, in their final at-bat, came up with a seven-run inning and went on to score an 11-5 victory over the host Matadors in a consolation bracket game of the Costa Mesa Tournament. Andy Whalen and Chris Stansbury led Laguna's offensive attack, each going 2 for 3. Whalen produced a pair of doubles and three RBI and Stansbury drove in two more runs.
