Talented dancers from around the country will soon spin through town, at the fifth annual CaDance Laguna Dance Festival. The three-week event will take place Sept. 19 through Oct. 4 at various locations in Laguna Beach, and will feature seven dance companies and several guest artists, Jodie Gates, the festival?s curator said. Debuting guests include Philadelphia-based Ballet X and Salt Lake City?s Ballet West companies. ?I expect this to be the most exciting season yet,?

Three women who have contributed greatly in various areas of Laguna Beach life will be honored Oct. 18 by the Laguna Beach branch of the American Assn. of University Women. "Women Making Magic in Our Community" is the theme of the group's 12th annual Leadership Dinner honoring Jodie Gates for her contributions in the Arts, Barbara Norton in Education and Environmentalism, and Johanna Felder in Community Activism. Hosted by Pat Kollenda, the event features musical entertainment, a magician, and a new "Not-So-Silent Auction," according to Jahn Levitt, chairwoman of the event.

Suzie Harrison Straight off performing on Broadway, renowned dancer Jodie Gates will bring the world of dance to Laguna with premier dance companies for Saturday's Dance Day. Gates spent last week dancing with the Complexions Dance Company at the Joyce Theatre in New York City. The new Artistic Director of Gallimaufry Dance in Laguna has come a long way from her Northern California roots. "At 15, I was discovered in Sacramento by director Robert Joffrey; he asked me if I would like to come to New York," Gates said.

French romantic comedy to premiere The Laguna Beach Film Society will premiere the French romantic comedy, ?I Do (How to Get Married and Stay Single),? at 7 p.m. Thursday at South Coast Cinemas. The film asks, ?What can the pampered, only son do when his sisters and mother decide that at 43 he should be married and living elsewhere? Maybe fake an engagement to a woman hired to leave him at the altar?? Tickets are $15 at the door, or $20 to participate in the pre-film wine and hors d?

Suzie Harrison It's good to have Tod A. Kubo back to direct and choreograph "Black & White," Laguna Beach Dance Company's summer dance performance at 8 p.m. tonight. "I was in New York for a year working; I had some great professional opportunities to pursue and took a sabbatical," Kubo said. Kubo started Laguna Beach Dance Company at the high school 10 years ago this fall. Professional faculty choreographers include Mychelle Perez and Teresa Avina.

The Laguna Dance Festival will host Backhausdance, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago for three performances Friday through Sunday at Laguna Playhouse in Laguna Beach. Orange County-based contemporary dance company, Backhausdance, will perform first Friday night. Then, two nationally renowned professional companies - San Francisco-based LINES Ballet and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago - - will join forces for a shared program on Saturday and Sunday. There will be two pre-performance discussions with company artistic directors one hour prior to the Friday and Sunday performances.

Dance Day offers wide range of styles The California Choreographers Dance Festival will host its second annual Dance Day on Saturday. The free day of dance will include classes and performances in a wide range of styles. The classes begin at 10 a.m. with a modern dance workshop by Cheryl Chaddick. From 11:30 a.m. to 12:50 p.m., Lula Washington will teach modern dance. Paul Maure will follow with a ballet class from 1 to 2:20 p.m. Steve Josephson will finish the day from 4:30 to 5:50 p.m. These classes will be held at No Square Theatre's rehearsal studio at 221 Broadway.

Hey kids, do you want to put on a show? Youngsters from fourth grade through high school will be able to gain some professional instruction in Laguna Beach over the next month — and perform in a youth-oriented musical as well. Laguna’s Gallimaufry Performing Arts will launch its summer musical theater workshop Monday and will offer morning classes through July 17. At the end of the session, students will be cast in Gallimaufry’s production of “Bugsy Malone,” which will take the stage for two weekends starting July 25. “Students will learn acting, singing and dance technique, as well as auditioning, improvisation and much more,” said Steve Josephson, Gallimaufry artistic director.

Girl Scouts win Bronze award Girl Scouts Christine Eidt, Allison Kono, Ashley Brown and Katie Hynson of Laguna Beach Junior Girl Scout Troop 2136 were awarded the Bronze award at the annual Girl Scout Bridging ceremony June 1. The Bronze award is the highest award a Girl Scout at the Junior level can achieve. Under the leadership of Joanna Schoon and Stephanie Andrews, the girls began working on the award in October, learning many new skills and completing 15 hours of community service.

A world-class event, CaDance Festival, will take center stage in Laguna Beach from Oct. 1 to Oct. 9, offering a full menu of top dance performances, master workshops and classes, an Oscar-nominated dance documentary with two of its stars in a attendance, and a gala event with Patrick Swayze. An esteemed dance professional for more than 20 years, Jodie Gates, the festival's artistic director, is bringing internationally recognized dancers and premier dance companies for the nine-day event.
