Former Angels baseball player Doug DeCinces and three others were indicted on insider trading charges for allegedly using non-public information to buy stock in a Santa Ana medical device company, federal authorities said Wednesday afternoon. DeCinces, who lives in Laguna Beach, allegedly used information from a former high-ranking official of the company, Advanced Medical Optics, to buy stock prior to the announcement of a tender offer from an international medical firm, according to a 44-count indictment.

Winter Fantasy wraps up Sunday Total paid attendance for the first three weeks of the Sawdust Art Festival?s Winter Fantasy has increased 9.3% from last year, according to Sawdust officials. The festival features more than 170 artisans exhibiting and selling a huge variety of wares. The Winter Fantasy?s last weekend is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Closing weekend highlights include: ?Puppy Adoption ? In collaboration with the Pet Rescue Group, the Sawdust Winter Fantasy will be hosting a puppy adoption in the gazebo area in Town Square on both days.

Building permit issues are topic for new group A group of Laguna Beach building professionals has formed an alliance dedicated to simplifying the construction permit process. Pro Laguna is still in the formative stage, according to designer and contractor Gregg Abel, who announced the formation of the group at the June 2 Laguna Beach City Council meeting. “We want to put our best foot forward to get all permits approved,” said Abel, a member of the group’s board of directors.

City Council candidates Bob Whalen and incumbent Verna Rollinger cashed in on supporters over the last week to bolster their campaign finances. Rollinger's fundraiser was held Sunday at the home of Dr. Gary and Betsy Jenkins. The Jenkinses also hosted Whalen's kickoff in March. Betsy Jenkins also serves as president of Laguna Beach Unified's school board. "It was amazing," said Rollinger, who is serving as mayor pro tem in the last year of her first term on the council. "We had more than 100 reservations and then a ton came without reservations, even some I had never met before.
