Bob Hurley, founder and chief executive of Costa Mesa-based clothing company Hurley International, will speak at Laguna College of Art + Design's graduation, the college announced in a news release. "Bob is more than a business success story," college President Jonathan Burke said in the release. "He led a cultural phenomenon that brought the surfing lifestyle into the mainstream. His philosophy of hard work and nurturing great talent - many of whom are LCAD students and alumni - is significant to our new generation of graduating artists and designers.

Digital media the topic of program discussion The Orange County Venture Group and the Orange County Technology Action Network are partnering to hold a major Digital Media program from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, at [seven degrees], 891 Laguna Canyon Road. This program will feature the chief executives of four Southern California venture-stage digital media companies: SodaHead?s Jason Feffer, IBY?s Abdul Kahn, Red5 Studios? Mark Kern and Slacker Radio?s Dennis Mudd. Beer, wine and appetizers will be served.

The MyHero Film Project, which aims to enlighten and inspire people of all ages with hero stories from around the globe, recently celebrated its 15th anniversary at the annual International Film Festival in Los Angeles, where eight aspiring filmmakers from Laguna Beach received awards for their touching documentaries. Held at the Ray Stark Family Theater at USC's School of Cinematic Arts, the event showed screenings of 37 winning films from more than 20 countries, and awarded filmmakers in an array of categories for outstanding work.

The Orange County Sheriff Department K-9 Unit recently visited the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach, according to a news release. Lt. Doug Williams and his dog Luna, a Belgian Malinois, discussed the importance for police dog support. The two are part of the search and rescue unit of Orange County. "Our members loved watching Luna's talents," said Executive Director Pam Estes said in a statement. "Thanks to the generosity of the Luna and Lieutenant Williams, 100 Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach members enjoyed a fun and informative presentation.

The Laguna College of Art + Design will host its spring open house on March 9. Prospective students as well as parents, teachers and counselors are invited to the interactive workshops and presentations from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the main Laguna Beach campus, 2222 Laguna Canyon Road. Staff from departments such as animation, design and digital media, drawing and painting, and game art and illustration will be on hand along with employees from admissions, financial aid and portfolio development.

Suzie Harrison Laguna Beach High School students and the Laguna Beach HIV advisory committee came together with locals to remember loved ones and spread awareness for World AIDS Day on Monday. HIV Advisory Committee chairperson Kim de St. Paer contacted Laguna Beach High School teacher Kerry Pellow to see if her desktop publishing and digital media classes would like to participate. "Kim called and said we know you've done the World AIDS Day posters in the past -- we would love if you could do them again," Pellow said.

Laguna Beach Unified School District is pushing forward a social media platform that connects teachers with students outside of the classroom. Victor Guthrie, district director of Educational Technology and Information Services, said the program - Edmodo - is essentially Facebook for the education world. "It reaches [students] the way they reach out to their peers," he said of the program. "Everyone is connecting on some sort of digital media and, historically, education is slow to adopt it. " LBUSD wants to change that.
