On Wednesday, Laguna began its bid for a third consecutive Orange Coast League championship with a 19-1 rout of visiting Estancia. The Breakers played shutout polo for the first three quarters before losing the shutout in the fourth. Laguna led, 10-0, after one quarter and 13-0 at the half. Taylor Dodson had four goals and three assists to lead the way. Melena Masson scored three goals and Annika Dries, Lexie Ross and Natasha Schulman each scored twice. Also finding the goal were Yoshi Andersen, Lida De Groote and Kaitlyn Waidley.

It?s been 16 days since they took to the pool for competition ? Dec. 23, to be exact ? but the layoff didn?t affect the Laguna Beach High girls? water polo team. Playing its first game since returning from the holiday break, the Breakers dominated Montebello on Tuesday, 17-6, in a nonleague game at the Laguna pool. The game was a battle between two teams ranked 1-2 in the CIF Southern Section Division II. In the end, top-ranked Laguna left little doubt as to who was No. 1. Annika Dries led the scoring with five goals.

The end of the year. A perfect time to reflect on some of the key athletic happenings that took place at Laguna Beach High school since last January. The Breakers accomplished many memorable feats, both team-wise and individually. Below are some of the key highlights that were reported to the Coastline Pilot: January-June The Laguna girls’ water polo team ended the 2007-08 season the same way as it currently stands in the 2008-09 season: as a serious contender for a CIF championship.

Another perfect run through Orange Coast League competition. That’s what the Laguna Beach High girls’ volleyball team accomplished Wednesday when they concluded league and regular season play with a 25-14, 25-6, 25-13 sweep of visiting Costa Mesa at Dugger Gym. The victory capped an 8-0 finish in league play. Laguna is now 21-8 overall and improved its all-time record against Costa Mesa to 42-1 (the loss was a Laguna forfeit of a match not played). Two Breakers hit double-digits in the kills department with Paulette Grand Pre recording 13 and Caroline Holte 10. Piper Obradovich had nine kills and 15 digs, Alexandra Palmer added eight digs and 30 assists, Allison Palmer had 11 digs and Chanel Stewart finished with eight digs.

Shawn Merz and Clay Knapp of Laguna Beach High have been named to the 2008 Division II LA84 Boys? Volleyball Team (formerly known as All-CIF). Merz, a senior outside hitter, was a first-team selection. Knapp, a senior setter, was named to the second team. During the 2008 season, Merz led Laguna Beach in kills (371) and points scored (417) and Knapp topped the team with 760 assists. with 760. The 2008 Division II LA84 team is as follows: First Team: Valencia (Jim Baughman, Sr.; Derrick Trent, Sr.)

Laguna Beach track and field athletes Yann Panassie and Matt Neev turned in strong performances Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Championships at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut. In the Division IV boys? 1,600-meter run, senior Yann Panassie finished in fourth place with a time of 4:31.80 and freshman Matt Neev was sixth (4:32.26) in an event won by Big Bear?s Alberto Solis (4:25.81). Neev also finished in eighth place in the boys? 3,200 with a time of 10:15.

The Laguna Beach High boys? volleyball team will play Dos Pueblos in a quarterfinal of the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs at 7 p.m. today at Dugger Gym. The Breakers previously dominated visiting Crescenta Valley 25-9, 25-14, 25-21 (May 9) and host Beckman, 25-22, 25-21, 25-16 (Tuesday). Crescenta was the No. 3 representative from the Pacific League and Beckman No. 2 from the Pacific Coast League. Dos Pueblos, which finished second in the Channel League, defeated Adolfo Camarillo, the Pacific View League champion Tuesday.

Football camp opens April 7 A Spring Football Skills Camp will take place April 7-9 at Guyer Field at Laguna Beach High. The camp will be held between 9 a.m. and noon on those three days and is open to youth grades third through eighth. Participants in the no-contact football skills camp will learn blocking and tackling forms as well as defensive and special teams position skills. Fundaments will be taught and executed during flag scrimmages. Each participant will receive a Laguna Beach football T-shirt but is required to bring athletic shorts, mouth guard and cleats, plus snack and sufficient water, each day of camp.

Nine days after bowing out of the CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs, the Laguna Beach girls’ water polo team returns to action today in the CIF Masters Meet. Laguna, which lost in the Division II semifinal round to eventual division champion Dos Pueblos, will take on Riverside Poly at 4 p.m. at the Newport Harbor High pool. The Breakers are seeded eighth in the 16-team, two-day, double-elimination tournament that concludes Saturday. Riverside Poly, which won the Division III championship last Saturday, is the No. 9 seed.
