After weeks of delay, the North Coast Interceptor sewer reconstruction project at Nyes Place is expected to be completed by the end of March, City Manager Ken Frank announced March 7 in his weekly update to city staff. Frank said the contractor has successfully installed the replacement pipe along the south end of the project. The installation of the new force main serving the Nyes Place lift station has taken longer than planned. The force main was installed March 5-6 and backfill will be completed next week.

School supplies sought for Easter baskets Laguna Presbyterian Church is raising funds to fill Easter baskets for Marines? children. This year, San Clemente Military Family Outreach has requested that the church stock baskets with much needed school supplies. The base school is located in Fallbrook School District. Teachers are either purchasing school supplies out of their own money, or their students are doing without. 2008 marks the fifth year that Laguna Presbyterian?

The final regular-season game in the Laguna Beach Little League AAA Division was a close contest between Sportsworld and UPS Store until the final innings, where division champion Sportsworld pulled away to score an 11-2 victory. UPS starting pitcher Conner Sorenson held Sportsworld to three runs in the first two innings, thanks in part to exceptional defensive plays by catcher Jack Casey. UPS threatened in the top of the second with speedy Will Clark scoring on a Timmy Laughlin hit. However, the brief rally was extinguished when Sportsworld's Curren Hendrickson entered the game and promptly struck out the first batter he faced.

A sculpture was reported stolen from the front of the 484 North Gallery at 1:01 p.m. Sunday. Owner Bob Kronquist said he noticed the sculpture was gone on Easter. A neighbor mentioned that a side gate was left open the night before. Kronquist said he believes the burglar parked in the alley and went up the side of the building to be discrete between 7 and 11 p.m. Saturday. The copper kinetic wind sculpture by Mark White was titled "Flame II" and valued at $1,950. It was placed in a sculpture garden in the front of the property among many other sculptures.

Hidden Treasure Sale is Saturday Soroptimist International of Laguna Beach is teaming up with Newport Beach-based Women of the Wells to hold the Hidden Treasure Sale. All of the proceeds from the sale will go to help build wells in remote areas of India that don't currently have access to clean water. The sale will feature donated items like household accessories, sporting equipment, small appliances, new or gently used clothing, toys and antiques. Cash donations will also be accepted at the sale, which will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion building, 384 Legion Ave., Laguna Beach.

A trio of City Council members, who do not always share the same philosophical positions, united Tuesday to certify the environmental impact report for projects on Third Street. Although no specific project was approved, the certification opens the way for a package deal that in concept would include a senior center, a community center, a remodeled Community Clinic and substantial underground parking. "I have a special deal for the council tonight and for tonight only -- a discount of $1.6 million," said City Manager Ken Frank, who recommended certification of the report.

Cold weather shelters may close next year The city of Laguna Beach may not be able to provide emergency cold weather shelters for the homeless next winter, City Manager Ken Frank reported in his Friday Update to city staff Feb. 27. “For the last three years, we have received $15,000 each year through Orange County from federal Community Development Block Grant funds,” Frank wrote. “For next year, the county is telling us they are recommending only $5,600.
