There was little doubt of how important the Pacific Coast League girls' tennis showdown between rivals Laguna Beach and visiting Corona del Mar was. Not only was it the league opener for both teams, but whichever squad emerged victorious, would have the early start in the race for the league crown. Laguna got that quick start. With No. 1 singles Claire Rietsch sweeping her three opponents, the Breakers remained unbeaten by handing the Sea Kings a 10-8 setback and payback -- Corona del Mar had defeated the Laguna twice last season.

Even as the team lost a couple of tough three-game matches, “improvement” was the word of the week for Laguna Beach High girls’ volleyball. And even with four sophomores starting, the Breakers showed that improvement at the prestigious Dave Mohs Invitational against some of the top teams in the county. Laguna Beach was seeded 21st but finished tied for ninth, only going out after pushing eventual semifinalist Orange Lutheran to three games in a 17-25, 25-23, 15-12 defeat Saturday.
