The Laguna Beach boys? track and field team knows this feeling. Once again, the Breakers are the class of the Orange Coast League. It has become customary for the Laguna Beach High girls' soccer team to make an annual trip during the holiday season to play nonleague games in Palm Desert. This year's excursion proved to be yet another successful bonding trip for the Breakers, plus a final tune-up before the start of league play. Before taking off to the desert, Laguna registered what Coach Bill Rolfing said was a "very satisfying result" against San Juan Hills, a scoreless tie against the host Stallions on Dec. 20. In their first outing in the desert, the Breakers suffered a last-minute, 2-1 loss Dec. 27 at Xavier Prep.

The Laguna Beach High girls' soccer team seems to be finding its stride in the stretch run of the regular season. The Breakers ran their unbeaten streak to five games and continued to hold on to first place in the Orange Coast League standings by taking out visiting Saddleback, 3-1, at Guyer Field Tuesday. The victory put Laguna at 5-1-1 in league, a record also held by Estancia, and gave the Breakers their 10th win (10-5-3) of the season. Coach Bill Rolfing said his team's first-half performance Tuesday proved to difference in the game.

It's been a busy, and successful, start to the month of May for the Laguna Beach High boys' tennis team. Laguna began its postseason journey Wednesday on its home court against Santa Maria. The Orange Coast League champion Breakers, the No. 4 seed in the CIF Southern Section Division 4 tournament, cruised to a 16-2 victory over the Saints (Los Padres League No. 3). Santa Maria had defeated Thacher (Condor League No. 3) in a wild-card match Tuesday to move on to the first-round match at Laguna.

Winning by a 5-0 score in boys' soccer might indicate that a team was working on all cylinders. That final was the end result Wednesday for Laguna Beach, which defeated visiting Calvary Chapel at Guyer Field. The outcome pleased Breakers Coach Dan Richards, although his team's performance wasn't indicative of what it could ultimately achieve. "Although the result on paper is good, we really didn't take our chances well enough today," Richards said. "We knew we had the ability to win the game comfortably and create a lot of goal scoring opportunities but didn't truly make it count.
