Stepping away from play in the Costa Mesa Tournament, the Laguna Beach High softball team took on Estancia and Sage Hill in a pair of nonleague games this past week. Laguna dropped both contests, losing, 10-1, at home against Estancia Tuesday, and dropping an 8-0 decision Thursday to Sage Hill. The Breakers were locked in a tight ballgame with Estancia heading into the fourth inning, where the Eagles clung to a 2-1 lead. But Estancia broke the game open in its fourth at-bat, getting five runs on four hits while taking advantage of three Laguna fielding errors.

Two tough losses in the past week knocked the Laguna Beach High girls' soccer team from the undefeated ranks in Orange Coast League play. In rainy conditions Tuesday at Guyer Field, host Laguna — which had opened league play with a 3-0-1 record — was edged by Calvary Chapel, 2-1. The teams played through a scoreless first half and Laguna got its only goal from Courtney Capobianco in the final half of play. Lauren Caris had eight saves. Previously, the Breakers were handed their first league loss by host Estancia, which scored two first-half goals and made them stand in a 2-0 victory.

LAGUNA BEACH – The Laguna Beach High baseball team is on a winning streak. But there are no more games left to play. The Breakers finished the season 14-15, 7-5 in Orange Coast League play, and without a spot in the 2008 playoffs. “We did a good job,” Laguna Coach Jeff Sears said. “We’ve learned from the past, and that’s what’s important.” They wrapped up with two back-to-back league victories over Estancia this week, putting them at 4-0 against Estancia.

Opportunities ? well, of the missed variety ? played a big part Wednesday for the Laguna Beach High boys? soccer team, which dropped a frustrating, 1-0, Orange Coast League match to visiting Estancia at Guyer Field. ?We need to put the ball in the net and we?re not doing that. That?s the name of the game,? Laguna Coach Patrick Coyne said. ?It?s tough to lose like that when you had your chances. Until we finish those opportunities, we?re not going to come out with a win. The boys played hard, though.
