Some dads are built to win "father of the year" contests. They volunteer for Boy Scouts, drive an Expedition and somehow find time to work out. I am not that man. I am more likely to lose my son at Costco. It's not that I am irresponsible; it's just that, well, I have three sons first of all, so things are often out of control. Put it this way: Holidays are not supposed to be scary, but I am always afraid of Father's Day. I just don't like it. It's intimidating and completely self-flagellating.

The calendar indicates that we are still in spring, although it seems that Laguna weather is more the seasonal equivalent of the Southern Hemisphere recently. Nevertheless, the first day of summer begins in less than three weeks, with Flag Day, graduations, Father’s Day, and the summer solstice filling our datebooks. The June birth flowers are the rose and the honeysuckle, as both bloom prodigiously throughout the month. And so, let’s get back to the garden with the Plant Man: Q. What flowers can I plant near the ocean?

Summer has finally shown her face. And a lovely face it is, as Laguna once again opens her arms to embrace the throngs of vacationing visitors. Cooper, my oldest son, was in town for the weekend. It wasn’t hard for him to coax me out of my tasks and into the joys of beach walks. Husband Steve and dog Buster joined us on Father’s Day. Heading from the house, we strolled down Thalia Street to check the surf. Because we had the dog, we weren’t allowed to walk on the sand.

The day dawns to the soft sounds of chirruping finches and wrens. An occasional mockingbird sings out as punctuation. As the coastal gray morning sky brightens the noisy crows arrive. It is like a signal: Time for the day to begin. The loudest voice. The squeakiest wheel. Crows and trash trucks. Disappointments and deaths. Some things just seem to get all the attention, be it negative or not. To most of us, there are times when this hardly seems fair. From the middle of June through the Fourth of July is like one long holiday month in Laguna.

I for one am sick and tired of reading letters from hypocrites who want to shut down the day labor hiring site in Laguna Canyon. Face it ? the Montage and literally hundreds of Laguna businesses and services would close down if the Latinos left town. Who would cut the lawns, cook for you when you are eating out and in many cases manage the business you take for granted and in most cases work for slave wages, not a living wage. Yes, the Montage charges $500+ a night for a room, but it pays many Latino employees $10 a hour ?
