Orange County Supervisor Pat Bates paid tribute at Memorial Day ceremonies in Laguna Beach to America’s war dead and to the ideals for which they fought. Bates was the keynote speaker at the annual ceremony, held Monday at Monument Point in Heisler Park and organized by Laguna’s American Legion Post 222 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5868. “We are joining millions across the nation today, honoring the men and women who proudly wore the uniform of the United States,” Bates said.

Barbara Diamond Orange County Supervisor Cynthia Coad was the guest speaker at the July 4 ceremonies hosted by the Laguna Beach post of the American Legion. "You may wonder why a supervisor would come to our little town on the Fourth of July," said Post 222 Commander David Connell. "At a Memorial Day ceremony, she spoke so movingly, we asked for a copy of her speech and she volunteered to come and give the speech." She gets full marks for courage.

One of the saddest sounds anyone can ever hear is "Taps" played at the last rites for those who gave their lives in the military service of our country. It is they who are most honored on Memorial Day, and Laguna paid its respects at the annual ceremonies held at Monument Point in Heisler Park, hosted by American Legion Post 222 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5858. But all the soldiers, sailors and pilots who serve their country ? some still in combat and some in veterans' hospitals ?

Barbara Diamond Laguna paid its respects on Monday to the men and women who gave their lives to preserve America's freedoms. "'Human shields' is a new term we've been hearing," said Mickey Conroy, keynote speaker at the Laguna Beach Memorial Day ceremonies. "Look at veterans cemeteries if you want to see true human shields." American Legion Post 222 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5868 present the ceremonies annually at Monument Point in Heisler Park.

Barbara Diamond May 30 is officially Memorial Day, but generally it is observed on the last Monday in May. Not this year. The World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. will be dedicated on Saturday, and American Legion posts around the country have been asked to coordinate local ceremonies. Laguna's ceremony will be held Saturday at the Veterans Monument in Heisler Park, beginning at 10:30 a.m., with music provided by Larry Wohrman. Four World War II veterans will share their experiences in the deadly war in which 295,000 Americans died in defense of their country and freedom from tyranny around the world.
