Church celebrates Labor Day The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will celebrate Labor Day at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, with words and music, emphasizing the role of women in the labor movement. DeAnn McEwen will speak about the California Nurses Assn. McEwen serves on the board of directors for the California Nurses Assn./National Nurses Organizing Committee. The service is at the fellowship, 429 Cypress Drive, and is followed by a sandwich lunch with opportunity for further discussion with McEwen.

Mother/adult daughter relationships will be explored in a half-day breakfast seminar from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 14, in Tankersley Hall at Laguna Presbyterian Church, 415 Forest Ave., Laguna Beach. Judy Balswick, speaker and author, will lead the seminar. Participants do not need to attend Laguna Presbyterian Church. This seminar is for women of all ages and is designed to provide practical tools for greater understanding and peace in the wonderful, but sometimes difficult, relationship between mothers and daughters, mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law.

Seminar will focus on understanding Islam Laguna Presbyterian Church will hold a seminar titled, "Understanding Islam: It's Roots and Relationship With the Christian Church." The discussion will include the question: "Does the media's mix of truth, myth and rumor leave you confused about Muslims, their world and their relationship to Christianity?" Nate Feldmeth, associate dean for extended education and professor of church history at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, will examine the historic roots of Islam, its similarities and differences to Christianity and its conflicts with the Christian Church through the centuries.

Robert Anthony Schuller to lead Crystal Cathedral congregation founded by his father 50 years ago.Like father, like son. The Rev. Robert Anthony Schuller of Laguna Beach has been chosen to succeed his father, the Rev. Robert H. Schuller, as senior pastor of Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove. Father and son hugged after the elder announced on New Year's Day that he would step down as senior pastor of the ministries that he founded 50 years ago. He will continue his service to the church, with the title of founding pastor, after his son is installed Jan. 22. Robert Anthony Schuller was born Oct. 7, 1954, in Illinois, one of five children and the only son of Robert H. and Arvella Schuller.

Friday Bestselling Author Jennifer Grant, author of "Love You More: The Divine Surprise of Adopting My Daughter," will appear at 6 p.m. at Laguna Beach Books, 1200 S. Coast Hwy, Suite 105. She will read from the book, answer questions and sign copies. The event is free. Kids Rosh Hashanah Kids can participate in Friday Night Live - Rosh Hashanah Style from 5 to 6 p.m. with crafts, holiday stories and games, Shofar blowing, cake decorating and more at the Chabad Jewish Center, 30804 S. Coast Hwy. Reservations are required, but admission is free.

Round-table talk planned All parents interested in learning ways to ground their children in faith are invited to hear Kara Powell, director of Youth/Family Ministries at Fuller Theological Seminary, who will talk about Sticky Faith, developing faith that will last a lifetime. Grieving during the holidays Jackie Pearson, a marriage and family counselor, will offer practical steps to bring relief and comfort to those dealing with grief during this holiday season at Laguna Presbyterian Church.
