“Summertime…and the living is easy…” lyrics by Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward Another song from this musical comes to mind as I write and causes me to smile, “It Ain’t Necessarily So.” The fullness of summertime — with both ease and hardship — is upon us. Big surf, heavy traffic, muggy heat and a certain slowness that seems fostered by all of these fill the days and nights in...

I was seeing green Saturday. The Sawdust Festival celebrated its sixth annual Green Day with activities for children and adults to raise awareness of the environment and how to protect it. Free green-themed classes and projects were held from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at various locations throughout the grounds. Young early birds learned about bees and their essential place in the environment as pollinators that produce fruits as well as the flowers that brighten our lives. Whole Foods sponsored the Childrens' Art Spot, where kids, 4 and older, created a collaborative honeycomb structure and bees from recycled cardboard.

Every Waste Management employee ends a conversation with “Have a Green Day,” but after talking to a customer representative last week, I was seeing red. I had done my spring garden cleanup and filled six trash containers, about par but only one of them Waste Management’s. I lined them up in front of my fence to be picked up on my regular trash day. They weren’t. The extra cans of green waste had always been collected before, but I figured it wasn’t a policy just a good will gesture.

Last Saturday, a friend and I went to Main Beach park about 5 p.m. The crowds were unbelievable. Apparently the announcement on all the major TV networks that Laguna was one of the cleanest beaches on the West Coast had attracted even more people. At the playlot, near the hotel, a lady was running about frantically looking for her little son. She went to the lifeguard in a new tower and told him. He called two more lifeguards, and they escorted her and a friend in two different directions through the crowds, looking for the little boy. Within 10 minutes three officers and two beach patrol officers showed up and then through the crowd, a lady came running saying he had been found by his dad. We walked north and saw people shooting pictures of what must be Laguna?

The theme of the 43rd annual Sawdust Art Festival is ?Where Art Happens.? More than 200 artists from Laguna will gather to display a mixed media of fine arts and crafts, including paintings, surf art, jewelry, hand-blown and fused glass, ceramics, textile, wood and metal sculpture, scrimshaw, photography, and more. Cynthia Fung, director of public relations and marketing for Sawdust, said the concept is based on artists interacting with the public and returning to Sawdust?
