What can be more delightful than a close encounter with wildlife? We tend to spend so much time with our faces pressed against something electronic, that the chance moments when life forms in the natural world collide with our own are noteworthy. And so it was this week, as a hummingbird decided to explore my bedroom. Well, not exactly decided; I'm pretty sure his entrance was accidental. When I heard the frenzy of wings and the pound of small body against the wall, I hurried upstairs and stood face to face with the tiny bird that had perched just above the window well.

Wheelbase Communications Is this what the new small Hummer will look like?: This General Motors division, which has staked a reputation as the builder of the largest off-road vehicles on the planet, has released several different design sketches of its HX Concept — the smallest Hummer — ahead of the vehicle’s Detroit Auto Show debut in early January. Designed for serious off-roading, the E85-capable HX (85 percent ethanol mixed with 15 percent gasoline) will offer removable roof panels, both front and rear.

The party was over early on Sunday morning for revelers inside a 50-foot Hummer limousine. The limousine, with 15 to 20 people inside it, was stopped at 1:14 a.m. Sunday on Coast Highway near Center Street by Laguna Beach police because of excessive noise and seat belt violations, Det. Sgt. Darin Lenyi said. During the stop, one occupant became unruly and was arrested on a charge of public drunkenness. Another man was held on a warrant. A third man was arrested after he allegedly attempted to help one of the arrestees escape from a police car. The limo was towed away by police.

Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of DUI Tuesday and will serve three years of informal probation during which he may have no drugs or alcohol, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s office. Sambora, 48, a Laguna Beach resident, had faced two misdemeanor counts for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a blood alcohol level of .08% or more on March 28 in Laguna Beach. Sambora will also take three months of first offender alcohol awareness classes and pay standard court restitution fees, district attorney spokeswoman Susan Kang Schroeder stated in a press release.

Rock guitarist Richie Sambora, 48, was pulled over by Laguna Beach Police at 10:52 p.m. March 25 on South Coast Highway at Brooks Street and arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to police records. Sambora, lead guitarist for Bon Jovi, was driving a black Hummer with three female passengers, Sgt. Jason Kravetz said. Two of the passengers were juveniles and one was an adult. Officers spotted Sambora driving erratically on South Coast Highway at Laguna Avenue and followed him south about eight blocks to Brooks Street, where they pulled him over.

Woman arrested on suspicion of auto theft Laguna Beach Police used a spike strip downtown Sept. 11 to help arrest of a suspected car thief, Sgt. Jason Kravetz said. Police were alerted at 2:37 p.m. that someone has just stolen a construction worker?s car from the 1300 block of Cliff Drive. About 20 minutes later, Watch Commander Sgt. Jeff Calvert saw the vehicle, a blue Isuzu, traveling northbound on Glenneyre Street in the 400 block. The vehicle was pulled over in the 200 block of Beach Street and many downtown streets were temporarily blocked for the police action, which included laying down a spike strip, which the suspect stopped in front of, Kravetz said.

But according to city officials, the spaces are no smaller and such observations may be caused by an optical illusion. But Len Weinstein, who with his wife has owned a business in Laguna since 1997, said that since the repaving he has been hearing complaints.
