Six local athletes came away with first-place finishes Sunday at Laguna Surf and Sport?s Spring Fever Surfabout. The one-day surf contest, under the guidance of contest director Jason Watson ? who finished in third-place in the Pro Division ? was held at Thalia Reef. The six winners were Jon Rose (Pro), Eric Nelson (35-and-Up Legends); Bobby Cherry (Men?s 19-34), Porter Hogan (Junior Men?s 15-18), Hunter Smith (14-and-Under) and Taylor Pitz (Girls). The Oak Street Surf Contest and Beach Clean-up sponsored by Soul Surfing?s Chris Williams was March 9 under sunny skies, with fun waves and a huge crowd of local families. Before the tournament, kids swept through the beach picking up trash under the auspices of Adopt-A-Beach Cleanup organizers. For many it was their first surfing competition. Salt Creek Beach served as the battleground between rivals Laguna Beach and Dana Hills high schools Thursday morning for the final team competition of the season. The last time these two teams met was in October, when Laguna had taken undefeated Dana Hills’ powerful men’s shortboard division in a noteworthy and exciting upset. Both share Salt Creek as their “home court” for practice and competition, so bragging rights were definitely on the line as many of these competitors see each other out in the lineup daily.

Regular season Majors Division champion Sportsworld made its first statement in the division's postseason tournament. Playing with a strong resolve to add to its trophy hardware, Sportsworld opened play in the tournament by blanking Team Hobie, 9-0, in Laguna Beach Little League action at Riddle Field. Sportsworld scored early but Team Hobie stayed in contention until the fourth inning. They posted their initial runs in their first at-bat, with Austin Paxson, Stevie Contursi and Taylor Preston getting on board to load the bases in the top of the first inning.

For the first time in more than eight years, the Laguna Beach High boys' water polo team won a tournament championship. Last weekend, the Breakers emerged from a field of 16 teams to win the Tustin Varsity Tournament, which was played over three days at high school pools at Tustin and Beckman. In pool play, Laguna defeated Cathedral (9-6) and Edison (15-11). The Breakers went on to survive Ventura, 8-7, in sudden death overtime, and then toppled Santa Margarita, 7-4, in the tournament final Saturday.
